A big thanks to Noah Oskow at Unseen Japan for giving “Pink Auteur, Red Outlaw” such a thorough and nuanced reading, and for asking difficult, important questions. Much to think about in this review and interview with biographer William Andrews. unseen-japan.com/pink-auteur…

It's not my preferred way to buy books, but Tokyo Doesn't Exist is now available from Amazon. Given the spirit of artistic integrity over commercial success that the memoir is passionately championing, ordering through your local bookshop is even better! amazon.com/Tokyo-Doesnt-Exis…

Breaking cover on this garbage website to let those of you still here, stalking the ruins, know that I have a new book out. "Tokyo Doesn't Exist" may be "Not a guide to music or cycling in Japan" but they're definitely a big part of it: awaimedia.com/Tokyo_Doesnt_E…

The book is a sort of travel memoir of when, 10 years ago, I spent about 6 months on and off travelling around Japan, investigating the local music scenes in every prefecture (except Tokyo). The release coincided with a return visit to Fukuoka and Kumamoto, so here's the pics:

It was very nice to talk with the New Books Network about my biography of Adachi Masao. We had an hour-long conversation about cinema, politics, collaboration, problematic sources, and more! newbooksnetwork.com/pink-aut…

The book has the urgency of a rescue. Kashmiri—which its approximately seven million speakers call Koshur—is the everyday language of the Valley’s Muslims and Hindus alike, but it has rarely been the language of power. asianreviewofbooks.com/the-b…

Looking forward to reading Ian Martin’s new, strikingly titled book, Tokyo Doesn’t Exist, a travel memoir and exploration of Japan’s local music scenes. (Full disclosure: Awai Books also recently published my book on Adachi Masao, Pink Auteur, Red Outlaw.) awaimedia.com/Tokyo_Doesnt_E…

William Andrews writes on the life and career of Masao Adachi, an iconic director—labeled as a provocateur, a radical, and a terrorist—whose filmography encompasses sexploitation, underground cinema, experimental documentary, biopics, and dark comedy. mubi.com/en/notebook/posts/m…
