Dick Riding is your thing 😭
Dear Redi, there is a better way to ask a question to achieve what you want. Time and space and angle. That was amertuerish and he was pushing a narrative......he is embedded or trying to be famous as if he is brave. That was foolish and stupid. He could have done better from an objective angle with appreciation of sense of occassion. He will forever remain to be known for such stupidity.

Molo Fikile, this is the right speech. It is 15 years too late. The decline did not start with the MK Party or the GNU. It started at the ANC's peak. These are the moments when this speech should have been given: 2007–2008, Polokwane and the recall of Mbeki. Factionalism became the main business of the movement, and COPE was the first split. That is the "internal divisions" you mention today. 2008, the start of load shedding. It was the first big sign that the state was failing at basic infrastructure. 2009–2011, the rise of service delivery protests. Communities were saying then exactly what you're saying now: no water, no refuse removal, no roads, councillors who don't show up. This was the moment for this speech. 2012–2015: Marikana, the Gupta landing at Waterkloof, the Nkandla findings, and Nenegate. Each one was a chance to choose accountability over loyalty. Each time the ANC defended the individual instead of the people. 2016, the loss of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay. That was the last clear warning before things became irreversible. 2018, VBS. Limpopo municipalities lost money that should have gone to water and roads. We still feel it here. If this speech had been given in 2011 and acted on, with consequences for failing councillors, cadres deployed on merit, and corruption prosecuted instead of protected, the ANC would not be at 31% today and many of our towns would not be in the state they're in. And to be honest, the words are not new. "Renewal" and "self-correction" have been in ANC conference documents for over a decade. The problem has never been diagnosis. It has been implementation and consequences. So the humility is welcome. But people will judge you on one thing: which councillors, mayors and officials face consequences in the next 12 months. Show us that, and the trust might follow.
[WATCH] THE ANC IS SELF INTROSPECTING The people of South Africa have spoken. As the ANC we have heard that my people. We recognise that many South Africans who once placed their confidence in the ANC have chosen to support other parties. Others have withdrawn from electoral participation altogether. We recognise their concerns, we will not question their judgement or explain away their decisions. We will confront the reasons why people who once regarded the ANC as their natural political home have become disillusioned with our movement. We must acknowledge that in too many communities local government has fallen short of the expectations of our people. Where communities have experienced unreliable water supplies, failing infrastructure, uncollected refuse, deteriorating roads, corruption and poor municipal administration, they have every right to demand better. Where public representatives have become distant from the people they were elected to serve, the people have every right to hold them accountable. And where our own internal divisions have distracted us from the needs of communities, we must accept responsibility. We cannot ask the people to trust us merely because of our history. Our history gives us a responsibility to serve. It does not give us an entitlement to govern. The ANC must earn the confidence of the people through what it does today and what it delivers tomorrow. That is the lesson of these elections. And it is a lesson we accept with humility.

I have no interest in the MKP or the EFF. I am convinced that they are destructive for South Africa. They will enable corruption, enhance state malfunction and result in societal collapse. Any party that enters into alliance with either does not have SA’s interest at heart.

I wasn't going to respond to this given its racist undertones, but I'll respond nonetheless. You say denying Helen the mayorship is "legally permissible but would violate the substantive intent of our democracy." What intent, Prof? Our Constitution says councils elect mayors. Every councillor is there because voters put them there. If parties representing the majority of voters come together and elect a mayor, that IS democracy working exactly as designed. A party on 35% has been rejected by 65% of voters. Nowhere does our democracy say the biggest party is entitled to the chain. And where was this "substantive intent" in 2024? MK won 45% in KZN, the biggest party by far, and was locked out by a coalition that included the DA. You said nothing. No sermons about democracy then. Instead, you call MK and the EFF, parties millions of black South Africans voted for, a path to "corruption," "state malfunction" and "societal collapse." So when black voters choose, it's collapse. When the DA falls short, excluding it is undemocratic. That's not a democratic principle. That's preference dressed up as one. Principles must be consistent, or they aren't principles at all.

Helen Zille is considering running for Joburg mayor in 2026 apparently. Let me tell you now, if she does, she will win. And not by accident. Like it or not, she has a proven record of turning a city around. Just look at Cape Town. You can debate her politics all you want, but she gets things done. Joburg, as it stands, is crying out for that kind of leadership. (And Cape Town has the lowest unemployment rate of all major cities). If this happens, the ANC will lose Johannesburg for good. And when Joburg goes, so does Gauteng. People are tired. They want working traffic lights, clean streets, functioning municipalities, not endless excuses. Right now, everyone is complaining about what the ANC has done to the city. Zille offers a real, visible alternative. This might be uncomfortable for some to hear, but mark this tweet and save it. If I am wrong, I will say so. But I doubt I will be.

No, we’re not gonna coddle grown ass people . My voting station has always been Nelspruit but I changed it in less than 5 minutes coz I live in Joburg now and this was months ago ! Lea tena lena
Kwasuka lokho, and she is likely not the only individual experiencing this issue. These are local elections meant to address the needs of residents within their own municipalities. Requiring her to vote in a different city for a mayor who will not represent her interests raises serious concerns about the effectiveness and fairness of the electoral process the IEC administers! @IECSouthAfrica, shame on you!

This right here is how many of us who were raised in the ANC feel. Fuck ANC.
Fully agree, and I'll own it. I'm very much an ANC beneficiary. BEE made it possible for the state to pay for my studies. After I qualified, it opened the door to a managerial role. I am where I am today because of policies the ANC put in place. But make no mistake, that will not make me loyal to a party that today does not put South Africans first. Gratitude for what was done yesterday doesn't excuse what's being done today. The best way to honour what we were given is to hold the people in power to the same standard that got us here. That's why I'm voting with my head, not my history.

No, Sibadala Local government elections are not the same as national and provincial. You're voting for a councillor in your ward, so you can only vote where you're registered. That's how it works. The IEC told us over and over to check. They sent SMSs, put ads on radio and TV, and you could check on the website or just SMS your ID number. It takes two minutes. Maybe some people's details were captured wrong, I won't deny that can happen. But that's exactly why we were told to check early, so it could be fixed before today. So no, I can't excuse an adult who didn't bother to check where they're registered and now wants to blame the IEC. Take accountability. Next time, check early.

“He rapes, but he saves.” He violates, but he delivers. Apparently, as long as there’s something to benefit from, accountability is negotiable.
You are all BENEFICIARIES of ANC POLICIES!

Don’t think calling someone an ANC beneficiary is a “gotcha” moment or an insult. EVERY SOUTH AFRICAN is a beneficiary of the ANC. We are standing in lines today to vote because of them (and others). Reflect on that. THIS DOES NOT MEAN IM VOTING ANC!

It is regrettable that South African policies led to the termination of AGOA for South Africa. This was a predictable and preventable outcome resulting from the rejection by South Africa's government of real concerns raised by the U.S. Government. I remain hopeful that we can find a path forward to address our larger bilateral concerns, but the South African government must understand the gravity of the situation. We know that if America succeeds, so too will South Africa. This is the partnership I will continue to pursue as expeditiously as possible. ustr.gov/about/policy-office…
