It's Mental Math Monday! How would you mentally calculate which is faster: going 6 miles in 5 minutes or going 7 miles in 6 minutes?

Maybe the answer to “when are we going to use this?” is:
You might not. But people who
build bridges, predict financial outcomes, invent vaccines, engineer defense systems, operate on you, develop your games, design stadiums
are using math. It’s not random. Be aware.

I don't trust your ideas about teaching if they depend on knowledge being "basic" or not.
👉 "Students need to know the basics and THEN we'll let them do interesting stuff."
All knowledge seems basic after you know it. All the stuff should be interesting.

Is it safe to say that of the three large “pieces” of mathematics—the reasoning, the concepts, and the calculations—calculations have been, far and away, the focus of school mathematics?
Is this because of ease of measurement?
Are we caught in an ironic circle?
