Here’s what many miss:
During peak family years demands on your time are insane and give rise to fantasizing about optionality.
Then the kids grow up, begin lives of their own, and suddenly things get very quiet. That’s when things flip. Friends who retired early are bored and often end up doing dopey things trying to occupy their time. Those who stayed in the game wake up with purpose, stay engaged and avoid dopey destructive behaviors. It’s all about moving gracefully through the stages of life. To my friends in peak insane family years, take a moment to soak it all in. It will pass quickly and someday you’ll give anything to experience it one last time. 👊

You’re right. That’s why the larger the “safe” allocation one has in their portfolio, the less sustainable higher withdrawal rates are over time (historically).

Sure you can make 1% a week selling naked puts, it’s the one week where you lose 8,000% that kinda hurts though.

Every systematic investor eventually faces the question: to AQR, or not to AQR?
When are Vanguard, Avantis, or DFA no longer enough to meet your objectives?

Folks seduced by the tax perks of tax-aware long/short strategies should read Schwab's addendum to its margin agreement for a cold shower.
The risks and costs they describe are not inherently bad, but investors and allocators need to know about them to...
• Know what they're buying
• Assess if they are well compensated
• Communicate effectively with clients
• Manage client (and their own) expectations
My latest blog is a write-up of the addendum.

Those calling for a bubble, major sell-off, correction coming, 1999 all over again........ might want to consider the underlying profitability of companies in the US market.
"Many observers have drawn parallels to the late 1990s, when the gap between US and non-US valuations was similarly wide. Some view this as an omen for future returns—and not a good one given the US market’s infamous “lost decade” starting in 2000.
But this comparison may not be apples-to-apples. The weighted average profitability of the US market has surged in recent years, rising from 42% five years ago to 62% as of November 30. That’s a very different backdrop from 1999, when US market profitability declined over the subsequent five years."

The same numbers can be interpreted in different ways by different people. Advisor @MarkTMeredith offers examples of when he’s been successful in helping clients find meaning in the numbers on Ep. 14 of The Behavioral Divide:

Last night, 60 Minutes ran a story comparing the current market with 1929. This is one of my pet peeves. These comparisons are wildly unsuitable. You can have commentators appear to be serious and thoughtful just by saying they're "concerned" a bunch of times. It's saying something while saying nothing.

Some Thoughts Heading Into 2025:
1.) Ignore the market experts & forecasts
2.) It's normal for markets to make new all-time highs

Annuity companies must've read Kahneman & Tversky!
The US stock market has delivered an average annual return of around 10% since 1926 so an 11.75% cap doesn't sound bad. Retirees see all the gains without the losses....
Until you see market returns laid out like this...

There are people whose advisors charge them $30K+/year, who will have underperformed the relevant benchmark this quarter due to unnecessarily high expense ratios, unworthy advisory fees, and terrible portfolio design and implementation — but will look at a statement that says they made money this quarter, and be good with the whole thing.

Props to @RightCapitalHQ on the new equity comp tools. Great visuals to help clients understand the wealth and tax impact of their equity comp plans.
