After the attacks @iaeaorg's Iran challenge is massive: Accounting for all the broken pieces of Iran's declared nuclear program & reconstituting the safeguards baseline; getting full access & Iran's cooperation; securing HR/tech/fin resources for decades: worldpoliticsreview.com/us-i…
Iran’s Nuclear Program Took a Real Hit. So Did IAEA Oversight of It worldpoliticsreview.com/us-i…
No idea whether this report can be confirmed. In run-up to JCPOA into late 2015 I was told by people in the room: "We know what Iran did." The outside world and the IAEA "don't need to go there."
#EXCLUSIVE : Experts from the "Weapons Group" of the "Amad Plan" – an Iranian nuclear weapons development program partially halted in 2004 – continued to lead, at least in part, until 2024, research teams that enabled the SPND organization to update the applied research and development capabilities preserved since 2004 within the nuclear archive of Project 110/111, and also to train the next generation of scientists and engineers for the moment when the order is given to break out to a bomb. This emerges from a comprehensive study conducted by Ronen Solomon as part of a book on "Iran's Nuclear Program and the Covert War to Thwart It."
Project 110/111 refers to specific components of Iran's nuclear weapons program under the Amad Plan, which was active primarily in the early 2000s. According to documents from the Iranian nuclear archive, seized by Israel’s Mossad in 2018, Project 110 focused on nuclear warhead development, including the design and testing of warhead systems for missile delivery. Project 111 involved efforts to integrate a nuclear warhead into the nose cone of ballistic missiles, such as the Shahab-3.
These projects were part of a broader effort to produce five nuclear warheads, each with a yield of approximately 10 kilotons, potentially for missile delivery or underground testing.
In mid-2003, as international scrutiny from the IAEA intensified, Iran restructured the Amad Plan, decentralizing and dispersing its elements. Project 110’s activities were divided into covert and overt streams. The covert stream involved secret research with no civilian cover story, while the overt stream was disguised as civilian research at universities. This restructuring allowed Iran to preserve nuclear weapons expertise under the Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND), established in 2011 as the successor to the Amad Plan.
The nuclear archive reveals that key personnel, including Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, continued to lead these efforts, maintaining the capability to resume weapons development if ordered.
Ukraine/Russia: If some people think that Leo XIV will be a kind of Francis II, tiptoeing around Putin, they may be dead wrong.
Sec. Rubio you are misinformed. Get your staff to translate: "Die Verfassungsschutzämter in Bund und Ländern verkörpern als Frühwarnsystem die Lehre der deutschen Geschichte: Nie wieder sollen Verfassungsfeinde durch die demokratischen Institutionen an die Macht marschieren."
Germany just gave its spy agency new powers to surveil the opposition. That’s not democracy—it’s tyranny in disguise.
What is truly extremist is not the popular AfD—which took second in the recent election—but rather the establishment’s deadly open border immigration policies that the AfD opposes.
Germany should reverse course.
2/2: Rubio knows nothing about this. The German Foreign Ministry corrects his errors for the record:
Replying to @SecRubio
This is democracy. This decision is the result of a thorough & independent investigation to protect our Constitution & the rule of law. It is independent courts that will have the final say. We have learnt from our history that rightwing extremism needs to be stopped.
Marco Rubio shows that he knows nothing about this issue.

2/2: In the big picture, for nearly a quarter century effective on-off denial of cooperation permitted Iran to stall verification and 'restart' IAEA diplomacy over a trajectory of 80+ IAEA board meetings

I told @Hannahkaviani that any new allegations of Iranian undeclared or clandestine actions would add to the West's already weighty agenda, making negotiation of a nuclear agreement with Iran still more difficult.

After 25 years, the last sentence is still a very speculative talking point.
So in retaliation the EU will impose a like tariff making overpromoted hot wines from Ynez CA more expensive than fine 1er cru wines from the Côte de Nuits. Here in Old Europe we will cheer.

Israel’s frankly embarrassing appeasement of Moscow has brought no noticeable gains. On the contrary, Russia has repaid Israel by not only hosting Hamas leaders but by stepping up its cooperation with Israel’s arch-enemy, Iran.
I wrote that back in Nov 2023, but even I couldn't have imagined how low Israel would go in its self-abasement and appeasement of #Russia. In voting against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia's invasion of #Ukraine, Israel has placed itself on the same side as North Korea. Quite simply, Netanyahu is terrified of both Trump and Putin, and the end result is shameful and inexcusable. Bibi and his supporters like to think of him as a strongman, but he is a coward.

Is Berlin still a divided city? The poll results from yesterday say yes. Eastern districts' second vote (Zweitstimme) leaned toward hard-right AFD, SPD, and Left. In the west Greens and CDU predominated.

BARC & IGCAR have long pedigrees in India's non-safeguarded plutonium-driven strategic nuclear program. So consistent with previous bilateral understandings, the US ruling comes with what nonproliferation assurances/firewalls?
