Our hearts go out to Helen Haines MP, her family, her staff, and the Australian people as they process this devastating news.

Kurt Vonnegut speaks of friction
Someone could probably write a book (if they haven’t already) about the cycle of technology productizing the removal of friction in the name of convenience only for us to discover that the friction was a load-bearing part of the social compact.

The risk to the ACT's MLAs has reached the point where armed guards will patrol the Legislative Assembly. Speaker Jeremy Hanson says the attack on Indi MP Helen Haines was not surprising given the increasing hostility towards politicians #auspol region.com.au/armed-guards-c…

This formulation will not survive contact with reality because no Central Asian country regards China as its “adversary.” That is an American construction that does not translate. And that is precisely why, in the past, the United States instead talked about “optionality” and the importance of helping to reduce the region’s dependence on a single point of transit, market, or partner. That is not the same as this construction, which has been tried before, e.g., by Pompeo, and went nowhere. As for Russia, as opposed to China, the administration itself is busily lifting sanctions and enabling Moscow, so that’s hardly credible either. “Multivector” foreign policy, which is a term often used in region, does not imply swapping one vector for another but means exactly what it says—having more than one vector and options in multiple directions on the compass.
Rubio tells C5 counterparts that the United States wants to build a critical-minerals supply chain with Central Asia so that it does not “ever have to rely on risky foreign partners or even adversaries.”

Replying to @MsMountebank
Hard to see an ideological motivation for an attack on a non-ideological independent MP, suspect the grievance if there was one was related to deeply personal/individual frustration with the ‘system’. The most angry calls I fielded working for an MP always related to frustration with Centrelink or child support.

Fareless transit doesn't redistribute wealth from the rich to the working class. It redistributes transit's inherently finite operating budget away from running service.

I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me in recent days. I wish to express my particular gratitude to the doctors, nurses and all the staff of the Gemelli Hospital. This experience has made me feel particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity. Now that I have overcome this delicate phase I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers.

Who exactly is claiming Jews have no historical connection to the land? Classic straw man fallacy here. Jewish historical and ancestral ties are well established. What they don’t establish is exclusive sovereignty, a right to dispossess Palestinians, or immunity from international law. Recognizing Palestinian rights doesn’t require denying Jewish history. Your anecdote refutes an argument quite literally nobody has made.
I was on a flight to Israel and struck up a conversation with the lady beside me. She was Jewish; her family were Holocaust survivors. As we saw the coastline of Israel from the window, she burst into tears. It was her first time visiting. Tell me again how Jews have no connection to the land of Israel.
