Magnetic Isolation and Concentration (MagIC)-cryo-EM is a new method to enable direct structural analysis of targets captured on nanomagnetic beads, which requires only 0.0005 mg/mL of targets in 100 µL crude solution to make 10 cryo-EM grids. I will explain the magic behind it!

Spindle assembly in Xenopus egg extracts! Videos were taken while working late into the night at @MBLScience with Aaron Groen and @GatlinLab. The montage is from our (@viktzv) recent retrospective in @MBoCjournal on a seminal paper by @rebeccaheald. ow.ly/GTsW50HHlPY

And here's another movie from our @MBoCjournal paper. This time the optogenetic oligomerization was triggered in interphase cells.

Punchline: optogentically oligomerized KNL1 recruits PP1 to microtubules in mitosis. KNL1 oligomers can bind microtubules and PP1 simultaneously. The Cry2 oligomerization tag - developed in the Schaffer lab @UCBerkeley and used in @brangwynnelab OptoDroplet assay - is powerful!
