Modern DRS must take into account existing material recovery facilities. For Ep 13 of Redemption, I talked to Lynn Hoffman (@EurekaMN) and @RobertKelman (@reloop_platform) about how & why MRFs should be integrated in a modern DRS. Listen here: bit.ly/3VWjSaV

Great idea to reduce plastics. Every city should do this. Thank you @ebottcher @Gothamist @THECITYNY @CityAndStateNY @PlasticPollutes @WNYC @NY1 @SierraClub @NRDC @Surfrider

In the 1970s—during an actual fiscal crisis—the @nycparks budget was 1.2% of the NYC budget, and there were 12,000 workers. In 2024, the @nycparks budget is only 0.5% of the NYC budget, and there are 8,000 workers. When it comes to investing in our parks, we are moving backwards. – at Queens, NY

There are 13,000 chemicals used in plastics. Of those, 3,000 are considered "of concern" (aka hazardous), 6,000 THAT WE HAVE NO SAFETY DATA ON(!), & the remaining 4,000 are not considered problematic. We need to get toxic chemicals out of plastic & stop making so much plastic. @CarlHeastie @AndreaSCousins

February is on course to break a record number of heat records, meteorologists say, as human-made global heating and the natural El Niño climate pattern drive up temperatures on land and oceans around the world. #ClimateEmergency

This NPR article explains that as the plastic industry championed recycling, they “knew that it wasn't a viable solution to deal with increasing amounts of waste”.

According to a 2017 @NYCSanitation study, 86% of #waste generated in our schools can be composted or recycled!
On February 7, students will learn about fun ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle at school through our #ClimateActionDays.

The bin in the middle is for food scraps, food-soiled paper and compostable utensils. The bin on the right is for trash, including soft plastics and other non-recyclable waste only.

🎉 Exciting news! 🎉 Thanks to our incredible community support, we've surpassed 20,000 signatures on our petition to save community composting! We're immensely grateful to everyone who signed and shared the petition to save these important programs.
At GrowNYC, we see composting as more than waste reduction—it's a tool for community building, fostering healthy soil for gardens, supporting urban farms, and combating climate change. Our passion for composting drives our fight to preserve these programs.
Special thanks to our city council colleagues for their unwavering support amid budget cuts proposed by Mayor Adams. Your dedication to sustainability and community building is truly inspiring.
Our work isn't done! We still need more signatures on our petition to demonstrate to Mayor Adams that community composting is indispensable for our city. Please continue sharing the petition with friends, family, and colleagues. Visit grownyc.org/petition to sign the petition and thank you for your ongoing support!

SAVE OUR COMPOST!
Join us in standing up for our community composters! Mayor Adams' plan to cut funding for community composting threatens to undo the vital work that compost organizations do for our city.
We invite you to join us on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 12 PM for a powerful event at City Hall Park. Together, we'll make our voices heard and demand the support needed to continue this crucial initiative.
We need your help to keep this work going! Bring your friends, family, and co-workers to the rally and let's make sure the City Council hears our voices loud and clear. Together, we can achieve climate and environmental justice for all New Yorkers. Visit bit.ly/3SVcICm to RSVP.
NO CUTS TO COMPOST!

There are many thousands of *real* birds flying over NYC right now during peak migration. Lights present a deadly hazard to them, and we already have 240,000 window-strike deaths a year here. This is horribly timed and must be canceled. @CentralParkNYC @NYCParks
