Of course they’re calling for a recount. This is good news the incumbent serving a second term. Experience navigating #Guyana’s off shore reseves. Let’s hope he can spread those benefits around to Guyanese 🇬🇾 people. #GuyanaElections
Guyana: President Mohamed Irfaan Ali (PPP/C, centre-left) has been sworn in for a second and final term after his party won 36/65 parliamentary seats in the September 1st general elections. Opposition parties APNU (left|centre-left) and WIN (*) are seeking recounts. #Guyana

Additional point: On top of that, after #Ukraine stopped letting Russian gas transit its soil, #Russia had to find an alternative route through Romania. It pays weekly for a smaller volume, putting TN on an even tighter Russian leash if they don’t play ball. A good article.
For years, #Moldova’s pro-Russian separative enclave of #Transnistria has benefitted from its ambiguous state: its territorial ‘grey zone’ making customs and tax loopholes possible. #Russia gave TN free oil in return for loyalty, making it cheap for factories to produce goods for export. However, after Russia invaded #Ukraine in 2022, Ukraine sealed its border with Transnistria to prevent Russian soldiers getting through: ‘Overnight, Transnistria lost its all important access to Ukraine’s #Odesa port’, says @polinaivanovva in today’s @FT . #Tiraspol’s shadow economy is in dire straits as a result.ft.com/content/7a10718e-75a2… via @ft

Agree entirely
The *correct* cost analysis is rather, what are you defending? If you were protecting a $10m MBT, a $1.5m missile is a good trade-off. OK, do you need cheaper methods, too? Absolutely!

Putin’s escalation only strengthens our resolve. Today the Ukraine Defence Contact Group secured £2bn through the UK-led International Fund for Ukraine to deliver priority military equipment to 🇺🇦 We are grateful to Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius for co-chairing.

Agreed.
If the PM wants to appoint a political appointee as UK Ambassador to US then David Miliband would be a good fit for Labour or he should appoint Sir Richard Moore.

2. Recorded today. #Russia is is playing a losing hand. I’ve been following George Friedman for years and later met his nephew Christian, (the interviewer), as a fellow War Studies Masters Student at Kings. There are various indicators in here that show #Trump has the advantage. @KCLSecurity @ruth_deyermond

Europe must determine whether Ukraine is essential to the continent’s security or not. If it is, several states, including Germany, must establish bilateral security agreements with Ukraine, incorporating “genuine” mutual defense commitments, potentially including troop deployments, as long as Ukraine remains outside NATO, to freeze the conflict and act as a deterrent. Otherwise, a future war is likely, as Russia will inevitably attack Ukraine again, having failed in its primary objective of installing a pro-Russian government. In my personal opinion, freezing the conflict will be difficult to achieve without robust European forces on the ground in Ukraine. However, the first priority before any of this becomes relevant, is Ukraine stabilizing the frontline in southern Donetsk in the coming weeks and months.

Ha ha ha ha ha. Great photo! I wonder if they lined them up like this on purpose… Mind you, suppose it’s better this way. If they’d put Zelensky in the middle, he would have looked like their child! 😂😂😂
Assad in a deep poop and Trump meets Zelensky wearing pro Ukraine colours. I am being betrayed from all sides. I remain a master strategist.

Good thread on current events in #Syria
Some thoughts about #Syria -regime will put up a fight in Hama because it prefers an urban area over an open base in the countryside. Opposition is not an army that can clear and move from a street to another while battling armored vehicles and tanks

When Russia demands Ukraine’s neutrality as a buffer zone between NATO and itself, what they really mean is that they reserve the right to invade Ukraine. Finland’s NATO membership, despite being close to Russia’s second-largest city, caused little reaction from Moscow simply because Russia had no plans to annex Finland in the foreseeable future. Ukraine was neutral when Crimea was annexed. What many forget is that this wasn’t the first aggression over Crimea - there was the Tuzla Island conflict in 2003, when Ukraine could still be considered a neutral country within Russia’s sphere of influence. The discussion of neutrality is meaningless because Russia doesn’t see Ukraine as an independent state. They think that it must either be fully annexed or exist under Russian control. Ukraine can’t be neutral when it’s being forced into subjugation, thus taking Russian side - a choice that people strongly oppose.

🕯️The Holodomor of 1932-1933 is a tragedy forever etched in the history of the Ukrainian people. It was a deliberate crime by the totalitarian Soviet regime, aimed at destroying the Ukrainian nation through an artificial famine. Today, we remember these tragic events to honor the memory of the millions who perished and to do everything possible to ensure that such crimes never happen again.

Trying out something called 'Buffer', which I looked up when trying to find a way to post something on Blue Skye and Twitter simultaneously. I have a 14 day free trial. Let's see if it's worth it. What does everyone else do if you post on two different accounts? Do you just cut and paste? Interested to know. #MakeMeAware

Excellent thread from #Russia specialist at @DSD_Kings @KingsRussia @KingsCollegeLon on why she thinks #Putin's threat to use nuclear weapons is posturing and simply a scare tactic. #RussiaUkraineWar @ruth_deyermond @samagreene
Given how cautious the Biden admin has been in Ukraine because of this fear, it was always clear they wouldn't have authorised the use of ATACMS if there had been any risk of Russia using nuclear weapons. 🧵
