New MakSPH Study Highlights Opportunities to Strengthen Malaria Prevention in Uganda
A new study led by researchers at @Makerere University School of Public Health has identified opportunities to strengthen malaria prevention in Uganda by addressing the social and environmental conditions that contribute to transmission.
Published in PLOS Global Public Health in September 2026, the study was authored by Assoc. Prof. @DavidMusoke14, @EdwinahAtusingw, Allan Ssembuusi and @SuzieNakalawa of MakSPH, alongside Kevin Deane of @OpenUniversity, United Kingdom.
The study explored barriers and opportunities to addressing social determinants of malaria, including poverty, poor housing, inadequate sanitation and limited access to healthcare.
Conducted in Wakiso District, the qualitative study involved 100 participants through 10 focus group discussions, 11 in-depth interviews and 14 key informant interviews with community members, health workers, local leaders and other stakeholders.
The findings identified three major barriers: an emphasis on treatment over prevention, inadequate coordination among institutions and partners, and complacency arising from malaria's persistent presence in communities.
The study also identified two opportunities: the involvement of multiple stakeholders in malaria control and existing government and community structures, including health inspectors, malaria focal persons, and community health workers.
The authors recommend building on these structures through stronger prevention, multisectoral coordination, and community engagement to address the underlying drivers of malaria transmission and advance Uganda's elimination efforts.

David Musoke gave Tornado Bees the perfect start to their Men’s UG20 campaign, smashing an unbeaten 68 before watching his bowlers finish off Nile CC for a 40-run victory at the Cricket Oval, Lugogo, on Saturday.
“Our target was getting not less than 200, given that this was a good wicket, not the strongest team, and this is exactly what we did,” Musoke said after the game. “We knew that if we had some of the opening batsmen still on the wicket, we would easily get there,” he added.
