It's official.
We've open source all OpenBB technology, under the Apache license. Since I've gotten many message about it this month - here's where you can find the Workspace codebase (github.com/OpenBB-finance/wo…).
A summary of what I've been doing over the last few weeks, since wind down announcement:
- We’ve created OpenBQ - a non-profit independent organization to steward OpenBB technology.
- This initiative is being led by Jose M. Plehn, Ph.D. from BrightQuery, and he’s hired folks from the OpenBB team to keep building it ( Ihsan Erman Saracgil, Darren Lee, Ogonna Nnamani )
- GitHub here: github.com/openbq-org
- The OpenBB Workspace codebase will be stewarded by FINOS (The Linux Foundation). Thank you for the help Gabriele Columbro , we finally made it happen!
- Labs proposal here: github.com/finos/community/i…
- BrightQuery is in the process of hosting a live BQ Workspace powered by BQ datasets.
- Waitlist here: workspace.brightquery.com
- The OpenBB user base will receive a notification once BrightQuery Workspace goes live. Same workspace with added datasets and functionality.
- OpenBB social media + newsletter + Discord (16k+ members) has been donated to OpenBQ.
Finally, thank you to OSS Capital and Joseph Jacks for being supportive of open sourcing the technology that we've built over the last 5 years. I couldn't have asked for a better partner in this journey.
And thank you to everyone who has allowed me to build OpenBB for so many years. And Jose for believing in the vision and taking it over! :)
For the next couple of weeks I'll be tinkering with a few side projects that I had on my pile of TODO ideas, and share some of that here (and on my newsletter) - until I start a new role in the industry.

I hadn't realized that for the first time ever, starting late last year, the Italian government pays less to borrow than France.

The Fed is printing money to buy US Treasury bills... more than during Covid.
- Covid: ~$320B
- Last 9 months: ~$355B
Everyone is talking about the Fed hike... no one is talking about Warsh printing money Covid-style to buy UST bills.
At the same time, Bessent is issuing more UST bills to buy back US long-term debt.
In other words, the Treasury buyback is nothing else than QE in disguise.
We don't own enough hard assets for what's coming.

on the hosted workspace
just an experiment so people can keep using it. same workspace, running fully client side, no account, no server of mine in the middle. similar to cryexc
your data stays in the browser, your api keys and connections never leave your machine. i'm hosting static files, nothing else
all of it will be open source anyway: openbb.josedonato.com

The Earnings Are Justified
Our latest Month In Macro. We dive deep into macro data to see whether the exuberance in US tech earnings expectations is grounded in macro realities.
We find that much of the earnings are justified. And we give you a game plan for when they turn.

Hormuz Is a Margin Call on the Entire System?💥💥
The events unfolding in the Middle East arrive at a particularly vulnerable moment for global funding markets.
The banking system has been under liquidity pressure for months. SOFR continues to trade above IORB - a classic indicator of reserve scarcity. The Private Equity complex is deleveraging. Credit conditions were already tightening before a single missile was fired.
Now we have a potential trigger - The Commodity Liquidity Nexus 💥🔥
We've seen this transmission mechanism before. In March 2022, Russia's invasion of Ukraine demonstrated how commodity market stress translates into broader liquidity events.
Commodity price shock
--> Margin calls cascade through the derivatives chain
-->Traders draw on bank credit facilities
-->Liquidity stress migrates from commodity desks to funding markets
The Strait of Hormuz is not merely another geopolitical flashpoint. It is the singular chokepoint for 20-30% of global oil and gas supply.
A closure, even partial, would set off several concurrent margin events:
-->Energy derivatives repricing across the curve.
-->War risk insurance premiums spiking on all Gulf-origin cargo.
-->Physical traders facing working capital calls on stranded inventory.
The Banking System's Capacity to Absorb
Here lies the concern. Commodity traders - Trafigura, Vitol, Glencore, Gunvor, rely on syndicated credit facilities from global banks. When margins spike, they draw.
The question is whether the banking system, already operating with constrained reserves, can meet a sudden surge in demand.
In 2022, the system absorbed the shock - but conditions were different. Today, reserve balances are lower, money market stress indicators are elevated, and risk appetite has contracted.
The commodity complex may once again prove to be the transmission vector for a broader liquidity event.
