A few people have asked 'what is to be done' to see greater success for defence startups. A few thoughts: The defence 'innovation ecosystem' is set up to send out stimuli to SMEs and young companies in the form of grants, support through accelerator programmes, offices for small business growth, etc. This is with the view of helping them eventually integrate their products within large programmes run by primes. There is nothing inherently wrong with this, but it creates a limbo state for smaller companies. There are enough opportunities out there to avoid fast failure, but also not enough to allow for radical success. This is undesirable for many investors, in particular VCs, because they are less likely to 'return the fund' on one investment than they would investing in other sectors. It is also a bad structure for leveraging the advantages of startups, which need fast and clear success and failure signals to decide to double down or move on to something else. Directing funding to contracts for cutting edge capability, rather than 'supporting innovation' might mean more young companies fail, but it would also provide an opportunity for the winners to scale rapidly. The DIP's £5bn over 4 years for 'autonomy' should be spent on open competitions and trials - we're already at risk of losing British companies like Skycutter to the US through similar programmes, why not run more of our own?
"If you’re ‘looking for growth’ as a startup, defence is not a great place to start." In Radical Honesty, @MacdonaldJam, from Blackmoor Defence, writes about how the system currently favours large, established companies and leaves smaller, younger ones out. Read below 📰

Britain talks a big game on defence, then makes it painful for new companies to build and sell into it. If we’re serious, we need founders, engineers and procurement that can move at wartime speed. Worth reading from John Macdonald 👇

This is a really brilliant conversation. James Phillips is an Oxbridge neuroscientist who served as a Special Advisor to Boris Johnson during Covid, working with Dominic Cummings. He has deep insights regarding the pandemic, govt efficiency, the UK civil service, etc. While the UK is experiencing difficult times, it lightens my heart to think that talented young men like James and Alf will contribute to her future! @alf_stff @AnEmergentI @Dominic2306 @michaelgove

An official report has called for RADICAL reforms that would revolutionise nuclear power in Britain. Government is rumoured to be wavering. We have 2 days before the Budget to PUSH them to act. Tell your MP: ACCEPT ALL the recommendations. 👇

At the 500ft long pile of rubbish by River Cherwell in Oxfordshire 🤢 ONLY 0.14% of fly-tipping cases end in prosecution. Authorities have let fly-tipping become LEGAL. Time to end this. We've launched the DIRTY DASHBOARD to pressure councils to ACT. Check where yours ranks 👇

Today is Day 33 since the Government approved plans for a second runway at Gatwick Airport. Only 12 metres of tarmac needs to be laid, yet construction still hasn't started.

Barnet FC is NOT in Barnet! Local fans can’t watch their own team play football in their own borough. The council won’t let them build a stadium after complaints that the floodlights might be too bright! Just another example of how you can’t build ANYTHING in Britain.
