This is a nice read about how one engineer fell in love with managing state as a finite state tree. It's interesting how old patterns reemerge in new frameworks, and seeing folks learn them for the first time.

Nothing has ever unnerved me like witnessing my child's first time totally ensorcelled by a glowing screen.
I spent my entire life stapled to a computer and yet still struggle to manage my own vulnerability to that trance. What if we can't? If we simply haven't evolved for this?

One of the neat features of Storybook 8’s new visual testing is that you can automatically detect when someone tries to add a moustache to your most prized artwork.

i miss the old react, straight from facebook react
componentDidMount react, with this.state.count react
i hate the new react, triangle crew react
be needing "use" react, server side views react
i miss the sweet react, boot up from vite react
i gotta say, at that time, i'd like to tweet react
see i invented react, it wasn't any react
and now i look and look around and there's so many reacts
i used to love react, i used to love react
i even had redux in it, i thought i was react
what if react made an app about about react
called it "i miss the old react"? man, that'd be so react
that's all it was react, we still love react
and i love you like theo loves react

I’m turning 34 today!
Letting go of linear goals has changed my life. To celebrate my birthday, I’m giving away $3400 to help 4 people become scientists of their own life.
Tell me about an experiment you want to run, where $850 would help make it happen.
Maybe it’s a video essay, a podcast miniseries, an indie research paper, a series of illustrations, a conference…
This could allow you to take some time off work, cover travel costs, purchase supplies, etc.
To maximize positive impact, there would ideally be some form of artifact people can consume at scale.
This is my first time doing something like this so i’m probably missing things – feel free to ask questions :)

Today, our palliative care team saw a terminally ill man experiencing homelessness.
He was shocked to meet health workers who cared enough to visit him on the streets.
Imagine the trauma a person has experienced to feel they aren't deserving of compassion.
Just imagine. 💔

Disgusted to hear the Ontario government will be ending physician & hospital services for uninsured people.
Marginalized uninsured people are human beings who deserve healthcare too.
Trying to save money by denying healthcare to society’s most vulnerable...is just wrong.

JS arrow functions are great.
✅ Concise
✅ Optional implicit return
✅ Don’t have their own “this” context
But, I don’t recommended using them everywhere.
Prefer function declarations for *top-level* functions.
Here's why.

ALT // Looks like a var at a glance 👎 // Order matters, since it's not hoisted.👎 // Can't be default exported on same line. 👎 const hi = () => 'Hi'; // Looks like a function at a glance 👍 // Order doesn't matter, since it's hoisted. 👍 // Can be default exported on same line. 👍 export default function hi() { return 'Hi'; }

You can use a combination of generics, keyof and an 'as' assertion to build a type-safe version of Object.keys.
It's a lovely way to get acquainted with the power of generics.
