It is with heavy hearts that we at MVJ share the recent passing of long-time member, Marine Corps veteran, prior MVJ fellow and intern Chip Lauterbach.
Chip came to the MVJ community in 2022, when he was chosen during our collaboration with the Scripps Howard Foundation for an internship with local publication The Harrisonburg Citizen. Chip had a deep dedication to writing and journalism, as well as a passion for civics and policy, and he combined these two into a career where he worked to keep his community informed of changes in their local government. Some examples of his work, from The Harrisonburg Citizen and Cardinal News:

He also sought opportunities to share his story of service with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines (Salty 3/9), as well as the impacts of said service on his life, to encourage others to do the same. Chip’s connection with MVJ both gave him a community to share that experience with and gave us the opportunity to play a small part in his life. We are grateful for his being part of MVJ and his dedication to serving his community via journalism.
MVJ and our community extend our sincerest condolences to Chip’s family in the wake of this loss. We encourage any community members interested in sharing their memories of Chip to leave a tribute on his online obituary here: t.ly/UBsLC
