As we enter harvest season across Michigan, remember that even if you have to slow down to 20 mph and follow a tractor for one mile, it takes only three minutes of your time – about the same amount as waiting for one stoplight. Drive safely, Michigan! michigan.gov/OHSP

News Release - Online Resources Added to Bring Awareness to Cold Cases Searching unsolved crimes and sharing information directly with Michigan State Police (MSP) investigators is now easier with dedicated webpages highlighting cold cases. “Adding online resources was a logical next step to continue the success we have seen from our specialized Cold Case units and investigative college programs across Michigan,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP. “Though it may take longer than we would like to get answers for living loved ones, we never stop trying. We encourage the public to view the information and connect with us.” September is National Cold Case Month which brings attention to unresolved homicides, missing and unidentified persons cases and other serial offenses. Statewide, the MSP has roughly 200 of these open incidents at any given time with 11 currently posted on Michigan.gov/ColdCases. Each entry is sorted by region and includes a summary of what is believed to have occurred. Additional cases will be added in the future. “Our detectives picked investigations to spotlight with family approval,” said Kelly Hodges, a Criminal Intelligence Analyst assigned to the Cold Case Unit. “We are actively soliciting tips in hopes closing cases, but we think it is equally important to show that we have not forgotten the victims.” If you have information regarding an unsolved cold case in Michigan, you can submit details directly to the MSP using a form on the webpage or by emailing [email protected].

News Release - July 20th Statewide Traffic Initiative Will Focus on Enforcing State’s ‘Move Over’ Law The easiest way to keep first responders and others who work on our roadways safe is to slow down and move over when you see the emergency lights of a police car, tow truck or other service vehicle on the side of the road. That’s the message connected to a one-day, high visibility enforcement effort that will take place on Monday, July 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., across Michigan and in neighboring states. “With at least 13 instances just this year of patrol vehicles being struck while conducting traffic stops, and seven MSP members killed while working on the side of the road in the department’s history, this is an important message we need everyone to hear,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police (MSP). “We always prefer education over enforcement, but during this single-day operation officers will be looking for and addressing dangerous driving behaviors, including motorists who disregard the state’s Move Over law.” Michigan’s Move Over law mandates that when a driver sees an emergency vehicle on the side of the road with its lights on, they must move over a lane and slow down at least 10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit. If moving over is not possible, the driver must slow down to at least 10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit and proceed with caution. The Michigan law applies to police vehicles, fire or EMS vehicles, construction vehicles and tow trucks. In addition to troopers and motor carrier officers from each MSP district, officers from several local Michigan law enforcement agencies, as well as troopers from state police departments in Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania, will join together in this effort to deliver consistent traffic safety messages highlighting officer safety by encouraging drivers to move over and avoid reckless and distracted driving behaviors.
