BREAKING: Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña has resigned over the collapse of Ueno Bank, which left millions of people unable to access their money, per CNN.
Ueno, a fast-growing digital lender with about 3 million customers, locked its branch doors, leaving depositors lined up with no way to withdraw. About 280,000 people who banked only with Ueno are being given new accounts at other banks, and the lender held about $800 million in public deposits.
Peña had ties to the bank: he once held a stake in Ueno’s holding company and appointed the head of Ueno’s predecessor to run Paraguay’s central bank.
