Memory before newness. If you're buying a Mac for local models, this is the chart to look at.
Ranked every Apple silicon Mac (58 chip/memory configs) by how many of 72 open models it runs well.
The surprise: a 2022 M1 Ultra with 128GB ties a brand-new M5 Max with 128GB (46 models each) and has more memory bandwidth (800 vs 614 GB/s).
For local AI, memory beats newness. Your old Mac might be better than you think.
