Mike Ege, editor of the Voice of San Francisco, wrote an idiotic piece this morning without bothering to pick up the phone and call us for comment.
We were instead subject to a lecture on reporting from someone who didn't do any. Telling for him and that outlet, but sad!
Eskenazi’s questionnaire is, technically, a survey.
But the timing makes it something more interesting.

If you've got some free time next Thursday...
NEXT WEEK
Come to the Internet Archive on Thurs, Oct. 8, for a free talk on money in San Francisco politics.
Who is spending the most? When does money win? When does it lose?
And is San Francisco an outlier across the country?

I've been covering the school board race and education for ML... This was a pretty fun one. Here are some more photos from Steve Kerr's visit.
Students, as rumors spread, at Visitacion Valley Middle School proclaimed to their friends that "Steph Curry was there!"
But it wasn’t Curry. Instead, it was his famous coach, Steve Kerr, visiting with the franchise on its day of service.

New from me:
After much public scrutiny, San Francisco supervisors on Tuesday dialed back a proposed $33 million extension to Mayor @DanielLurie 's OpenGov permitting overhaul software.

21st century equivalent of legacy gas stations and their remediation costs for housing. The wrinkle being these prime sites aren't owned by franchise owners but rather tech capital with significant site infrastructure upgrades made. @MLNow / @EskSF

In @MLNow there is a good piece by @EskSF about the land rush for centrally located AV depots

“If you could rent out your land to an AV company and you’re getting a 6 percent return on land value, why would you sell your land?” asks the broker. “You’d have to get a lot more.” @EskSF

Jere Ramsey spends so much time in the Concord immigration court, she knows the name of all of the janitors & security guards. And they know her name too.

Replying to @markasaurus @EskSF
"Less hard, city officials say, would be formulating a performance-based contract for OpenGov — with actual deliverables and deadlines, and carrots and sticks for meeting them or missing them.
This, of course, is exactly what the city didn’t do."

“City inspectors and contractors tell me that it’s slower to turn around a rudimentary permit on OpenGov than it would have been to wander down to the Building Department and get it over the counter.” @EskSF @MLNow
Just as San Francisco moved to require that homeless service providers prove their programs work, it advanced an extension for OpenGov.
That’s the struggling permit software unilaterally selected by the mayor’s office.
It could give you whiplash.

For more than a year, @MLNow documented unsafe living conditions at Alice Griffith Apartments. That reporting helped spur a $9M settlement; San Francisco’s City Attorney called it “tremendously helpful.” missionlocal.org/2026/08/ali…

Throwing an extra $33 million to a no bid private contactor who isn't doing a great job so they can do a better job is questionable!
SF obtained the OpenGov system in a controversial, no-bid process.
The city wants to lock it in until 2031 for $33M more.
Workers say it can only do rudimentary tasks — and they're still relying on systems it was meant to replace

Was Walter Mackins a cabbie who took photos or a photographer who drove a cab?
The answer, of course, is YES.
