This actually made me lol, because, fair?
I will never get over how AI/ML people use the word “inference”

We've seen some worrisome patterns in the way that members of the press engage with women in tech, the questions they ask and the angles they take. Being proactive folks, we've created a 🤗guide to make sure that doesn't happen! linkedin.com/pulse/rules-pre…

🧵 The historic NYT v. @OpenAI lawsuit filed this morning, as broken down by me, an IP and AI lawyer, general counsel, and longtime tech person and enthusiast. Tl;dr - It's the best case yet alleging that generative AI is copyright infringement. Thread. 👇

Partial list: 1. Transparency about what is actually in OAI models/datasets (ht @BlancheMinerva) 2. Azure cloud contract transparency--who's licensing GPT, for what use, how much $ 3. Transparency on training/calibration (RLHF etc) costs, w details on labor process + worker pay
what would you like openai to build/fix in 2024?

Whoa, impressed by this strongly worded letter from science committee leaders to @NIST & @WHOSTP about the due diligence required for us to properly evaluate AI systems in deployment. "Evaluations...cannot be based on speculation or.. unsound research" science.house.gov/press-rele…

Shout out to the 17 yo Canadian boy who sat next to me on a train in Italy yesterday. He shared his enthusiastic delight in his first experience overseas with me, pointing out all the small details that were new to him (the trees! The roads!) Sharing that experience was joyful❤️

I’m coming back to the point I always come back to, we need more interdisciplinary education. We need liberal arts. We need mandatory and MEANINGFUL ethics courses for scientist and technologists.

I had SO much fun giving the @michiganstateu Physics Colloquium last week! The FRIB/MSU scientists are like family at this point, a mix of students I have supervised and scientists who supervised me. And an added surprise of favs from @FSUPhysics?!? 💯
While at ⁦@FRIBLab⁩ last week, I had the opportunity to see Michelle Kuchera’s colloquium talk on machine learning in nuclear and particle physics. We are so proud she is a ⁦@FloridaState⁩ grad! Now on the physics faculty at ⁦@DavidsonCollege⁩. ⁦@MKizzyy⁩

Kudos to @WildcatTech . I got locked out of all of my Davidson accounts (password reset issue, my bad) while here in Italy, and they were on the phone with me within 30 seconds. I was back up and running in a coupe of minutes 🙌

Absolutely awesome discussion on AI Ethics and the @UNESCO recommendations from @EmmaR_Bloem at the @ictpnews Workshop on Machine Learning in Citizen Science. This has been such an enriching week!

Aww, thanks! It was SO fun to talk to people from all over the world who are working on citizen science initiatives.
Today, we got a whirlwind tour of machine learning principles from Michelle Kuchera (@MKizzyy) of Davidson College. She made the topic way more transparent and understandable. #ML #NowItMakesSense @ictpnews

Seconded!! It was the best school I have attended. I went to the Dublin school back in 2012 😊

This is interesting! But I’d point out that this is a feature of ML research in much of the physical sciences. We have mechanistic models that can be used as a causal, generative ground truth models & use them to further AI research. That was a message of my NeurIPS2016 keynote – at Wisconsin, USA

Compiling explicit, hand-written algorithms into weights means that we can now generate groundtruth models with a known mechanism. Then we can evaluate existing interpretability tools by applying them to these well-behaving models and examine the resulting explanation. 2/
