Going to be cutting our relay beans next week.
It’s funny to me that when I talk about this with different people at different places people always say “show me some data”
I haven’t done the same thing twice in a row for 12 years…trying to make incremental improvements every year.
The reason it’s much better is from constant improvement from looking at plant response to spacing, density, maturities, weed control strategies including how we plant crops. Using wheat like a proxy war capturing 75% of the field and cramming triple - quintuple rows between
Instead what if we looked at derivatives. This system captures water, CO2, and sunlight for 380 days vs monocrops that do for 100. That’s the business of agriculture…and without going to all our dogmatic posts about how every aspect of everything is black and white… maybe we get out of our truck when it’s pouring down rain…or to look at the morning sun, afternoon, and evening. Look at how plants placed in certain venues change how they grow. It’s literally a game of inches.
I’m still not happy. I’m thinking of inventing a money tree concept where you take the general design of row crop cultivator unit with independent linkage off a toolbar and weld 3 or 4 different 90 degree stair stepped toolbars. I think to further optimize the system you need at least 5 planting units set 3 or 4” apart. Also band spraying would eliminate the metabolization of chemistry for the wheat. Also…. Side dressing wheat during the planting pass. Also ways to sidedress the cereal while planting the summer crop.
Units could have pneumatic down pressure and couplers for seed instead of hoses direct back to seeding mechanism. All that and the trips across the field are lessened. The agronomics improve another step… and people can adjust everything on the fly to work on their operation.
If you’ve followed me with all the economic advantages. I guess the point of this post is to say instead of defending exactly how my system is comprised the work is in the research and the striving to get better. The value is in where it will take you. A clear competitive advantage you’ll have for years afterwards

From a regenerative agronomy perspective I think we cracked the code this year.
Alleys were sown in wheat last fall.
Clover was droned on in February
12 way cover was droned on when the wheat was in dough stage and pushed down with a cultipacker letting the wheat and clover live
No tillage
No chemistry
Just sequencing of plants and the impact of livestock
The science of @stockcropper is plants feeding animals and animals feeding plants… rotating crops and forage that turns biomass into fertilizer. Add the “edge effect” or overyielding of the edge rows of corn and this system is untouchable for acre profitability. It’s been proven and improved upon now for 6 years by me and @zebulousprime and backed up with 3rd party research from @PrecisionPlant
What’s funny about #farmweird is that no matter how great it gets… it’s “not feasible” because it doesn’t scale across the corn belt… but most importantly (in the lens of industry) we’ve decoupled the need and reliance for farm inputs.
I’ve always said “don’t study the ants, study the crumbs”
Response tells the truth.
So why continue to do it? Because happiness isn’t about how to get rich by selling products.
Happiness is a math formula
Quality of life + fulfillment - envy
We’re going to ride around the sun hopefully another 40 or 50 years… and get better and better at designing systems… and every year we gain more people that want to stop being a manager of death and start creating more life with more life.
