It’s actually frustrating that Vitalik is barely in the top 20 and possibly behind Toly even though he’s done more for this industry than almost everyone on that list combined. Larsen, Novo, and Saylor are all above him!? Send ETH to $25K immediately to rectify this.

Your Uber to the airport this morning cost $207.15. Your driver (me) earned $73.02, or $51.84 after vehicle expenses. Uber kept $86.52, or 42% of your fare, AFTER insurance, taxes, and other fees. $86.52 > $73.02. Uber (software) kept more for arranging the trip than it paid me to drive 60 miles over 74 minutes. Here’s what makes this interesting. I’m a data guy and I’ve driven this exact airport trip about 190 times over the past few years. Passengers usually pay around $123, and Uber typically keeps 20%. Today, you paid $84 more than usual. There was nothing in the app explaining the higher price. You just happened to pay significantly more for the same trip, and Uber kept most of that difference. I’m not complaining about the $73 fare. I’m pointing out how the system works.

Charles Schwab has completed its rollout of direct ethereum:native trading. All clients can now access Schwab Crypto, CEO Rick Wurster said at the firm’s Fall Business Update yesterday. Clients can also begin transferring existing crypto holdings in. @CharlesSchwab at a glance: → $13.33 trillion in client assets as of 30 September → 40.26 million active brokerage accounts ETH is one of only two assets Schwab chose to open with, along with Bitcoin. Ethereum is the home of onchain finance.

I am leaving Cambridge after a few days spent for a workshop on fast finality, concurrent with other workshops on post-quantum crypto and formal verification. Quick takeaways - Faster finality is coming, the research is mature, even as new ideas have come in during the week, the handoff to specifiers and implementers feels well underway. Next catalyst event will be at devcon in a few weeks, with core devs - The performance numbers for post-quantum finality are improving massively, and this is the worst that they’ll ever be. This is significant, it means the penalty from moving to more complex crypto would not require, in my opinion, if the numbers hold up, a deep rearchitecting to move to PQ-secure consensus, in particular when it comes to incentives - The biggest opportunity imo remains networking. Simulations and live experiments are exploring both the current pre-PQ setting, where networking is clearly the bottleneck, and the post-PQ setting, where compute remains the bottleneck. But with PQ compute numbers improving, I wouldn’t be surprised if once again networking becomes the bottleneck All of this is making me extremely bullish that we’ll achieve PQ-secure and faster finality even faster. Many thanks to @yannvon @benjaminion_xyz and @robsaltini for the workshop, and to @corcoranwill and @drakefjustin for hosting us in Cambridge!

A recent warning said AI could break Bitcoin “soon,” prompting “bunker mode” talk. No such attack exists. I made this video to explain why there’s no need to panic, about this or quantum computers, and what it means in light of Russell Impagliazzo’s five cryptographic worlds. 🧠

Updating the post below, since it was popular with readers. The ability to use BTC as collateral continues to grow. This is important for any asset and it should be watched, because it increases utility and inherent value. Coinbase recently added to its “borrow” product that lets customers borrow cash using their BTC as collateral. There are now three options. See the screenshot below (taken today). Recap: You deposit BTC as collateral and get USDC, which is immediately convertible to USD, then a quick transfer to your linked bank account. Attractive rates. You can choose to repay the loan whenever you want, at which point you get your BTC back (so you retain any future price appreciation). That’s a very attractive option for various types of borrowers ranging from individuals to small businesses. I’ve been surprised by how many people -- even veterans of the BTC space -- don’t seem to be aware of how easy this process has become, or that it even exists. But make no mistake: This is huge financial innovation. And Coinbase definitely isn’t alone -- other companies also offer this product. Keep watching as BTC collateral usage grows. Over the long term, it’s important.
In the decade I’ve been posting here, I’ve never done a product review. But here’s one that may interest readers. I tried out Coinbase’s “borrow” product. This lets customers borrow cash using their BTC as collateral. I didn’t have a need for this, but since it’s becoming a popular retail-facing product for Coinbase and other companies, I wanted to see how easy they’ve made it. I was amazed. The entire process was simple and took just a few minutes. You deposit BTC as collateral and get USDC, which is immediately convertible to USD, then a quick transfer to your linked bank account. It’s seamless and you never leave the platform. The variable APR 30-day average is currently 4.82%. Of course DeFi borrowing has been around a long time. But my sense is that many people in this space don’t realize how easy the process has become for the casual, non-tech user (or how competitive the APRs are). It certainly makes BTC an even more useful and attractive asset to own. My main takeaway was “disruption.” Once you get in the trenches and see how quickly products are evolving in this space, you understand the growth potential -- and how much the legacy Wall Street firms will lose if they don’t adapt and dive in.

I’m happy to announce Aztec’s post-quantum roadmap. I can’t predict if or when quantum computers will happen, but we have been preparing since day 1 of designing Aztec. Aztec today is highly quantum resistant and our protocol already defends against harvest-now-decrypt-later attacks. Migrating to a fully post-quantum system is a major challenge but one we are prepared for. By the end of 2030, Aztec is going to be fully post-quantum. aztec.network/blog/post-quan…

Big congratulations to the @zksync airbender team for this milestone. At this point, I consider the battle for speed to be definitively won, and the top priority for zkEVMs should shift fully to security. To me that means formally verifying (i) equivalence of the arithmetization to the ethereum spec (ii) a hard maximum bound on (prover cost) / (amount of gas in block) (iii) security of the proof system itself firefly.social/post/x/211001…

Fiscal dominance. And it begs the question; if hikes don’t have the same effect, is going further really the answer?
The Fed may have to go further than in prior cycles to slow down activity Hikes don't have the same effect as before

Absolutely incredible. Just 10 stocks have driven 70% of the S&P 500’s gain since March 30th. These stocks have added +16 percentage points to the index’s +23% gain over this period. Nvidia, $NVDA, has contributed the most, accounting for 13% of the S&P 500's gain, or +3 percentage points. This is followed by Micron, $MU, Apple, $AAPL, and Microsoft, $MSFT, each accounting for 9% of the S&P 500’s advance, adding +2 percentage points. Return contributions of AMD, $AMD, and Alphabet, $GOOGL, have been 8% and 7%, respectively. Meanwhile, the remaining 490 stocks have accounted for just 30% of the S&P 500's gain since March 30th, adding +7 percentage points. Diversification is dead.

There are many ways to tap into Ethereum’s unique features. Its two unique features to me are its decentralisation, and its state: liquidity, user accounts etc, all accumulated from 11 years of continuous uptime. Decentralisation and trustlessness of the L1 have been the key to obtaining liquidity over time, including for ETH. Some use cases want to tap into the chain’s decentralisation, and build to obtain the same properties that decentralisation offers: integrity, uptime and fair access (safety, liveness, censorship-resistance). Some use cases want to tap into liquidity. This is not parasitic: this creates demand for L1-issued assets, in particular ETH. Some use cases want to tap into both! But the liquidity is only there, once again, because of the L1’s decentralisation and trustlessness. Making the L1 a better home for liquidity amplifies something that is originally there because of the L1’s core properties. In particular, L1 should serve as the root of trust for assets that go on to be deployed across various use cases. Note that this argument does not depend on whether the use case in question is offered as “an L2” or not. L1 apps, including some tokens, may offer very little of the properties that the chain offers maximally. Let us not confuse the way a use case is packaged with the properties it offers. L2s themselves come in different shapes, and at the limit blur with what one might recognise as an L1 application. So we need not pin our hopes on any one kind of package to realise the potential of Ethereum. We need not reject them either, when their success celebrates Ethereum’s unique offering to the world. We may even support their emergence, particularly so when providing them the means to succeed is aligned with improving the L1’s own core properties.
I'm not anti-L2 at all, not even anti-centralized-L2. I think blockchain is a great format for corporates to do fintech in. But the main unique feature of Ethereum is its decentralization/autonomy. So, catering to customers who don't use that feature (and don't *need* it, so will probably never use it) is just bad business.
