Uber kept $86.52, or 42% of your fare, AFTER insurance, taxes, and other fees. $86.52 > $73.02. Uber (software) kept more for arranging the trip than it paid me to drive 60 miles over 74 minutes. Here’s what makes this interesting. I’m a data guy and I’ve driven this exact airport trip about 190 times over the past few years. Passengers usually pay around $123, and Uber typically keeps 20%. Today, you paid $84 more than usual. There was nothing in the app explaining the higher price. You just happened to pay significantly more for the same trip, and Uber kept most of that difference. I’m not complaining about the $73 fare. I’m pointing out how the system works.

I love the human connections I make as an Uber driver.

I’m trying my best to live above the algorithm. I can’t live without algorithms. Heck, as an Uber driver and YouTuber, I feel almost governed by them. I know I’m not—it just feels that way. Living above the algorithm is my way of acknowledging that algorithms exist for my use. They’re dangerous, or better said, they’re addicting. I mean, I don’t need them but they’re everywhere and have value. I don’t want to escape algorithms. I definitely don’t want to live underneath algorithms. So I think living with algorithms, below me, serving me when I want them. I’m going to live above the algorithm.
