Hemingway Was Right A 🧵 by L.T. Standing There came a time in my life when I had done the work one can do to become a writer. I had given decades to the craft and still wrote like crap. I couldn't understand why. So I did what people who want to be published authors do and I dug deeper. Who did I look up to in prose and why? It came down to two, Hemingway and one other. I chose Hemingway, so I looked at what he said. Basically, his advice was: Go To War. At the time there wasn't a war worth going to, but not even a year later one became available. I debated as I signed to an assault battalion, I could die trying to write. And I knew that. If I wanted to know, then I had to go. So I went. Very quickly writing became the least important thing in my life. Living was now my only concern. Sure, I have backgrounds in mental health, terrorism studies, and even professional violence. Ya, none of that prepared me for the process of war. Sure, it made me qualified, but one is never 'ready for it.' Not for the ups of the line and not for the incredible lows of life on the line. Nothing prepares you, but old Ernest was right, as the bombs fell the birds sang, the sun rose, the breathing paced our movements and we moved forward. He was right the dust makes glitter in the wind, the sorrow hits harder when you know the look that used to brighten their eyes. Kissing is deeper and honor is a moment not a lifetime. There were lots of things he failed to mention and those lessons I learned the hard way. Don't drink, not even on your time off, climbing out is much harder than climbing in. Don't look away from the shitty behavior and justify it in yourself or others, don't shy from the tears, don't cry just because you can. It all swirls like Dorothy's house in the cyclone and you land in a place where you can write. You can pace the climb up a mountain into an adventure. You can catch the deepest fish in the depths of an uncharted sea. Because after war fiction isn't the problem. Finding those threads to tug humanity out of themselves isn't the problem. No, the problem becomes you. Your dreams, your memories, your modest traumatic experiences you laugh about, traumatize other people. So much depth, and yet very little makes the page. End of days are near every day in Ukraine. What Hemingway didn't say is that the price you pay is dying. How could he, no one would take his advice if they knew the price was all they had become would be gone, but in this world you can sell your soul to the devil or the work. Either way it's going to be taken from you, reshaped into something that you weren't before. I don't play pretend time games, would have, could have is nonsense. I respect the craft enough to know what it costs me. To realize building a civilization takes watching one be destroyed, that is how you learn the yellow sweater that was so carefully packed and hangs half burned from the car, a child's hand still holding the doll with the matching dress she wore on what became her last day, this matters, tasting the tears is not the same as weeping them. You learn because you find out with your own heart, your own senses, then you look around and you see just how many people still can't write. Yet, they can live, they can sleep, they can't give you something you get so lost in the real world for a time becomes forgotten. They can't because they haven't lost themselves to the cause of the page. To the careless tossing of life and limb to the bombardments of hate and destruction. I can, the price was steep, so is the inkwell left behind in my soul.

Drones exploding; we had KABs earlier. People just don't understand; if they don't live with it daily, what it is like every day, someone you never met is trying to kill you. Meanwhile, politicians argue, and people or bots try to explain that not fighting and giving up will make it better, despite proof of battlefield wins. I am tired, and unless you're here and have been out there fighting it, you can't understand how tired I really am. It's not just, " Oh, my family, my house, my city". No it's orders to walk into hell, orders to walk back. Orders to return. I am Frontline tired. It's a handful of souls in this world who truly know how tired. Many speak, few have walked in the boots.

Imagine if, four years after invading Iraq, we controlled only 20% of it and had suffered 1.3 million casualties. Would anyone call that “winning”? Of course not. But when it’s Russia, we’re supposed to believe Putin holds all the cards.

It’s important to remind ourselves that we are allowed to be tired, emotional, anxious, whatever, as long as it’s rational. Too often am I finding myself thinking, “Other people are hauling ass on the zero,” without remembering that humans were not created for this level of war. To have war is primal. To have an FPV chasing after you… that’s a level of unnecessary evolution that we as humans allowed to happen. Our emotions as civilians aren’t less significant, and they don’t need to necessarily be minimized, just because other people are have it worse. We just need to have a really high amount of respect and sweetness towards the people fighting incredible levels of evil so that the rest of us don’t have to. Just be rational. That’s all. ❤️

Who has lost control of the black and Caspian sea? 🇷🇺 Who's navy is hiding and using civilian transports for military and business operations? 🇷🇺 Whose refineries and data centres are getting absolutely malleted? 🇷🇺 Whose airforces are getting hammered? 🇷🇺 Who has lost over 1.6 million troops? 🇷🇺 Who lost 176² km last week? 🇷🇺 Who has lost over 80% of their strategic bomber force? 🇷🇺 Which nation caused all of this to take place on land, sea, and air to what was once considered one of the strongest militaries on Earth? 🇺🇦

The sounds of KAB strikes in the Zaporizhzhia region can be heard all the way across the city. Soon, the leaves will fall from the trees, and the sounds will be even louder. But! When a KAB hits a neighboring yard, as happened quite recently, it’s not just that everything inside me turns cold and freezes. Within a second, I’m already in the bathtub with Lola, her bedding, and my phone — I grabbed everything instinctively, without even having time to realize what I was doing. Days have passed, and I still don’t remember exactly how it happened. My legs simply carried us to safety. This is our reality.

somewhere in Canada tonight, a family is sitting by the phone. They're waiting for news from CFB Wainwright. They're waiting to hear a voice they've heard a thousand times, saying "I'm okay." Some of those calls won't come. We don't talk enough about what our service members and their families carry. They miss birthdays and holidays and bedtimes, all to keep the rest of us safe, often without us ever knowing their names. Tonight, hold your people a little closer. To the families of those lost and injured: a whole country is with you. 🇨🇦🕯️

I want to update my original post which was based on another post that laid out the scenario & location of the incident. I accepted the scenario & questioned the location. In fact I’ve now received a great deal of new information from soldiers who were there & want to correct the record. So here’s what I know: the location is correct, the scenario (an artillery round caused the explosion) was totally wrong. Soldiers on the ground are saying 2 training scenarios were happening in that location simultaneously. First there is lots of static ranges that face the second lake from rifle ranges to a 60 mm mortar range to a grenade range to an antitank range limited to the M72 & 84 mm Carl Gustov. These hand held shoulder fired anti armour weapons have been used by CDN infantry platoons for 4 decades now. They are generally very effective & reliable. I’m told a Carl G was being fired at a target some 300 metres away from a static cement bay using the standing position. The safety officer stands about 18” away in a cement bay observing every action taken by the loader & gunner. This is very basic infantry training & carried out at least annually. In this case a high explosive (HE) round was being fired. Apparently shortly after the HE round was fired it malfunctioned & dove at full speed into the ground striking either a buried natural gas wellhead or pipeline which exploded. There were casualties at this range caused by the blast wave. Simultaneously there were some 150 soldiers training in fighting in built up areas (FIBUA or Urban Warfare) using blank ammo or just running through the basic drills using dry fire. No live ammunition, no explosives of any type, certainly no live indirect fire. There were 3 wooden structures being used & all three were completely destroyed by the blast. A significant number of casualties occurred here. The explosion led to a grass fire which was whipped up by strong gusts of wind which blew directly through the units bivouac site (tented area where troops sleep, rest, park vehicles etc) casing additional casualties. The fire then continued on & went beyond the training area into the municipality of Wainwright. At this point, it appears that this series of incidents began with a round malfunctioning & doing damage that never could have been imagined let alone predicted or prevented. As was the case last night, the fog of war/crisis still exists so information may still change. This is not because of a cover up or some imaginary conspiracy. If the casualty count is only half as high as some are claiming you will have to go back to the darkest days of WWII to find similar numbers & never has a training exercise seen anything like this so a great deal must be done in the immediate aftermath before making definitive public statements so please have patience, please believe everyone is trying to get this right & those who really care are more than willing to correct their earlier errors as the newest information comes in. Think long & hard about what you post…thousand of soldiers & their families are watching! Please keep them all including the military & civilian first responders in your prayers. I hope this helps & I’ll potentially post more as it becomes available.
I have no direct knowledge about what happened but based on this post, I think I can add some clarity to things I read in the comments. There are many types of ranges within the CFB Wainwright training area & there is an attached permanent base area that has training & administrative buildings, dining halls, barracks & even a whole community of houses for married permanent staff members. All ranges are in the training area several kms from the base area. Some ranges are permanent & fixed in place, some amount to an area on the map & range orders that tell the user what types of weapons can be fired within that designated area. This type of live fire range is likely where this incident took place. Once you decide that a live fire range is going to happen a Range Safety Officer must be designated. The RSO works with Assistant RSO’s who are qualified to template (safely determine where a weapon can be fired from based on its maximum range, if it’s an indirect fire weapon like an artillery or mortar shell, there’s lots of added factors to be considered) the different weapons that will be used from rifles to medium & heavy MG’s to anti tank weapons to 2 calibres of mortars to artillery. All these folks work with a permanent base organization called Range Control who ensure all the templates are properly done, all the safety rules are understood, all the temporary safety staff are qualified for their jobs & that flags, road barriers & guards on the outer perimeter have been assigned & are in place so no one just wonders into a shit storm. They assign a safety frequency separate from the tactical frequency. Whenever any obstacles or sensitive things are located within a designated live fire training area or range, they are made known to the range safety staff by Range Control so that buffer or restricted zones can be placed around them. The area indicated (see the map) near the 2 lakes was never authorized for indirect fire & if my memory is correct, it was never authorized for any form of live fire training. It should also be noted that prior to any live fire range involving multiple weapons systems (especially indirect fire) & movement by troops, the safety staff would not just rely on maps & templates & written rules, they would be walking the ground repeatedly so they were 100% familiar with what is referred to as the trace, which is just another way of saying, the direction the training troops would generally follow. A good range gives as much latitude to the tactical officer or NCO in charge to fire & maneuver using the ground to their advantage but still ensuring that their weapons are staying within the safety arcs. This takes a lot of effort by a very large safety team & must also stand up to the inspection by a full time Range Control Officer. Typically indirect fire is tightly controlled both by the safety staff assigned to monitor the tactical fire controllers requesting the indirect fire & by the safety team at the gun or mortar line positions to ensure the rounds will land safely & avoid any potentially dangerous targets such as a gas well. This is double checked by those doing the firing & their safety monitors several kms away. So two things jump off the page with this report. One based on my years of working in Wainwright both as a trainee, as permanent staff & as a safety officer for indirect mortar fire countless times including on static & maneuver ranges, I can’t imagine this part of the training area ever being used for any form of live fire let alone indirect fire. And two, the idea that at least 6 people would have had to miss the fact that a restricted target had been selected or the folks at the gun line had entered the coordinates incorrectly into the targeting computer or set up the gun line incorrectly is beyond imagination. There are so many safety redundancies built into using indirect artillery fire with troops on the ground it’s nearly impossible to believe. Hope this helps!

At time of the incident wind speed was gusting to 69kph. Live-fire training operations on CF ranges are governed by general range safety orders to prevent wildfires. RCOs halt live-fire exercises if wind gusts exceed safe operational levels (50kph+) Somebody screwed up. Bad.😢

Additional reports from CFB Wainwright suggest a Carl Gustaf (Carl G) 84 mm anti tank round may have struck a natural gas/pipeline during a live fire training exercise. According to local accounts, the impact ignited a fire that intensified as winds picked up, spreading toward a munitions storage shed and reportedly triggering secondary detonations. ➟ Casualties are reportedly in the hundreds, with earlier accounts suggesting at least 100 affected. Official figures remain unavailable. ➟ Regional hospitals are reportedly operating under Code Orange, a mass casualty emergency protocol. The extent of these activations remains unconfirmed. ➟ STARS reportedly dispatched two air ambulance helicopters from Edmonton and Saskatoon. ➟ Two flights involving C-FSUG, a civilian Beechcraft King Air B200 operated by Alberta Central Airways and previously associated with Alberta Health Services medical transport, reportedly landed tonight. The aircraft typically accommodates 6 to 8 passengers plus crew. Its possible involvement in casualty evacuations remains unconfirmed. Authorities have confirmed 7 fatalities and many injuries, while the specific cause, casualty figures, hospital alerts and secondary detonations await independent verification. Additionally: The reported number of personnel potentially affected within a relatively concentrated area is worth examining, particularly during a live fire exercise. If casualty estimates in the hundreds are accurate, further information about troop positioning, proximity to the incident and the circumstances of their exposure would help clarify what occurred.

A six-year-old girl who lost her mother in a ruzzian strike on Zaporizhzhia last night is now in hospital. There, she will wait for her dad, who serves in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. She is only six years old…
Zaporizhzhia. Tonight, a ruzzian drone struck a residential building. A 27-year-old woman was killed. Every Ukrainian goes to sleep not knowing whether they will wake up in the morning.

Accounts from someone on the firing line was it was a shoulder fired HE round that "Dolphined" after it left the tube and went astray. NOT artillery. This round hit a gas well which exploded and flattened the 3 Kill Houses that were full of troops which happened to be in close proximity of the well. Approx 300 troops inside and many waiting outside them. There is nothing but splinters left of them. This also started a major fire that was fed by high winds that swept through the main Bivouac site housing the majority of troops in the field. The amount of injured is staggering and the fatality count IS going to climb as they recover more victims. In my 20+ years in the Army, I have only heard of a dolphining round happening once from a shoulder fired rocket. Not sure what would cause this other than possibly a faulty propellent.
