For essays, I use LiquidText. I write on an iPad with external keyboard. This is a godsend, it allows you to create projects with different source texts, excerpt bits, highligt, make notes. Love it.

LiquidText got a major redesign! Sadly, I don’t have any projects down the pipeline to check it out thoroughly, but I’m happy to see one of my favorite iPad apps getting a fresh coat of paint.

Liquidtext is great. It makes good use of the pen and goes beyond regular marking/annotation, e.g. extract snippets, link them, pinch text.
