Ireland’s housing crisis in one graph.
Sobering and depressing.
From @ronanlyons great new book, Brittle.

Just to be clear about what happened here:
- Trump cut a deal with Putin that will route ~$4B of American dollars to Russia. That money will be used to fund the war.
- Trump announced an "energy ceasefire" that was probably Putin's idea, surprised the Ukrainians, is structured to benefit Russia, and was immediately broken by the Russian military.
- When Zelensky spoke candidly about these terrible deals, the US cut off Starlink access in ways that made it harder for Ukraine to intercept Russian drones, and seemingly withheld intel about ballistic missile attacks.
- Last week alone, Russia killed more than 150 civilians in Ukraine, including 33 in one strike on a bus stop.
Trump is de facto asking @ZelenskyyUa to surrender. Zelensky can throw on a suit, he can endure lectures from whiny little bitches like @JDVance, but he can't lay down and die just because Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize.

Dublin is on track for 3m people. Do we want it to be:
A city with a strong centre accessed by rail, like Munich (on the left...)
OR...
A city with jobs spread out along highways like Dallas (right)?
Without deliberate planning and investment, we'll end up more like Dallas.

The most unlikely bipartisan issue in the US today? State ownership of the means of production. In @Newsweek, I explain what MAGA Republicans and Democratic Socialists should learn from Sweden’s failed experiment – called a “black hole” by a Social Democratic finance minister.

Or maybe Denmark...
🇫🇷🇨🇭 France is now widely described as the sick man of Europe, yet Switzerland is rarely mentioned as a compelling counterfactual. The two countries followed almost identical fiscal paths between 1990 and 2000, with Switzerland also carrying substantial public debt by the standards of the time and facing a rising debt trajectory. In 2001, however, Switzerland enshrined an optimal fiscal rule in its constitution and subsequently implemented it to the letter, with extraordinary results. The question remains the same, why does the economics profession not study the Swiss case more thoroughly?

🔺David McWilliams: The Irish State has become a monstrously bloated organisation that has lost all sense of value for money
"Even from a cyclical perspective, a country at full employment does not need any more money thrown at it – the economy is already bursting at the seams – and yet this week’s Budget 2027 is throwing a net €7.4 billion extra into an already bloated system"

The Fiscal Council has just published its Flash Release on Budget 2027. Here are the key takeaways:
Budget 2027 puts the public finances on a worse trajectory by repeatedly breaking established spending limits and increasingly relying on high-risk corporation tax.

Outside the school context, the overwhelmingly dominant mode of teaching people things is to use Direct Instruction — you literally show them what to do and make them practice it — but education theorists insist this is bad.

The draft embodies many regrettable trends: insistence on an unworkable political commitment to 40% "continuous" assessment, the veneration of "skills" over actual knowledge, and a shady consultative process that has marginalised real expertise. Link: thefitzwilliam.com/p/leaving…

This is good news and will reduce the risk and cost of building everything from wastewater treatment plants to new homes.
Ireland does about 51 environmental impact assessments per million people; Germany does 4; the Netherlands and Denmark do 2.
Government plans already screen for environmental impact, so having developers (incl the State itself) do more screenings is just wasteful duplication
In 2010, the European Commission estimated that the cost of EIAs is about €146-215 million per year (with the costs to developers--incl governments-- estimated to be about half a billion to €846 million per year).
