Neurons aren't the whole story in SCA1. 🧠
In our new @jclinicalinvest paper, we show that mutant ataxin-1 in oligodendrocytes alone drives demyelination & motor deficits.

Thanks to @Janghoolim, @YaleMed & co-authors! @LimLabYale @LeonTejwani
Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) is a neurodegenerative disease driven by polyglutamine expansion in ataxin-1.

Here, Changwoo (Chris) Lee @chchrislee, Janghoo Lim @Janghoolim @LimLabYale & team provide strong evidence on the role of oligodendrocyte-specific expression of pathogenic ATXN1 in neuronal malfunction and systemic dysfunction in mouse models of this incurable disease.
The image: Purkinje cell torpedoes and myelin debris in the granular layer are increased in OL-SCA1-934 cKI mice.

Some exciting news – our @Yale_INP grad student Ashley Owens just received a Notice of Award for her F31 Fellowship through @NIH_NINDS which will support her research into #lysosomes and #tau pathology
Huge congratulations! 👏🥳🎉
As a new semester gets off to a start, we'd like to highlight our 2 new graduate students who recently joined us for their thesis research🔬
A brief thread 🧵
Annabel Default is a @YaleGenetics🧬grad student who studied chemical engineering and biochemistry at @Northeastern. Her focus in the lab will be elucidating 🔎 the signaling pathway of Nemo-like Kinase in the context of lysosome regulation 🧫
Emma Downey is a @Yale_INP🧠grad student who studied biomedical engineering at @TuftsUniversity. In the lab, she will be growing SCA1 cortical organoids🧫 to use as a model to study disease progression🩻in human cells
Farewell to our postgrad Vaishnavi Veeranki (@vveeranki1) we're going to miss you!
We are so excited for her to begin grad school at @UCIrvine working towards her PhD in neuroscience!
Congratulations 🎉
