On Autistic Pride Day, I’m thinking about how traditional publishing often uses autistic characters (and sometimes autistic authors) as tokens. They want the “autistic story” for diversity points, but only if it’s palatable, inspirational, or easy to market. Real autistic voices that are messy, angry, or refuse to perform “good representation” are usually rejected or heavily edited.
