I'm a failed experiment, blending Kafka, Faulkner, Camus, and Orwell, which places me in this modern, simple world and makes me more misanthropic.

I’ll be honest with you. I couldn’t review this one myself. @CollingsMaccrae is one of Nook’s favorites in this universe. She supported us back when we were just a little blog, and that kind of loyalty stays with you. 💛 So I’m grateful that our new contributor, @JRLarriba, read and reviewed #IndecentInk independently. A stolen manuscript, a growing body count, and Fox Argall at his sharpest. I can’t wait for you to meet him again. 📚 Indecent Ink by Collings MacCrae

Indecent Ink
by Collings MacCrae ★★★★★ Exceptional A stolen manuscript. A burglary no ordinary thief could pull off. A body count that keeps climbing, and an old nemesis lurking behind it all. Fox Argall, still healing from a serious injury, takes the case with the people who keep his health and judgment in check. The book is a sharp thriller wrapped around a tender, clear-eyed portrait of a neurodivergent genius, with an ending that surprises and earns it. Sophisticated, mature, and built to be reread. 🚨U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald for @SDNYnews on the new torture charges against Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores: “This case is the result of incredible cooperation among law enforcement agencies, and it shows that we and our law enforcement partners will make exceptional efforts to investigate and prosecute human rights abuses, narco-terrorism, and narcotics trafficking around the world.”
A superseding indictment was just unsealed charging Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores with conspiracy to commit torture, including the alleged torture of United States citizens for over two decades, in addition to the narcotics trafficking and weapons offenses already charged. Since their capture and arrest, @TheJusticeDept has been working to uncover the extent of their alleged crimes against the people of Venezuela and of the United States, and these additional charges reflect the dedication of this Administration to delivering justice for the victims of torture, narcoterrorism, and organized crime.

Indie books are usually my favorites!❤️ #Indie books are often written better than trad books, and some of the most invisible among them have the greatest quality of prose, plot, & character development! Honestly, quality and popularity are only weakly correlated now.
I just DNF’d a very popular trad book because the writing was terrible. I’m currently in the middle of an indie that’s one of the best books I’ve read all year, and that folks…is why I don’t measure my worth as an author based on whether or not trad publishing is interested in my work. 💁🏽‍♀️

Excellent news On behalf of all of us at JRN, I extend a warm welcome to Robert and look forward to his being part of the team. (Now, with the standard pleasantries out of the way, I wish to address Robert directly.) We haven't engaged much, this is true. However, from the scant interactions we've had, I am personally stoked to have you aboard. I mean that. Your general positions are admirable, and the review you've submitted already to us was not only thorough and professional, but it also had a certain uniqueness to it. I appreciate that greatly because the last thing I want is for all of us to use the same exact style. Welcome aboard Sir, I am beyond thrilled that you've joined us.
Welcome to the Nook, Robert Lewis! The Nook is growing, and we’re thrilled to introduce our newest editorial reviewer, Robert Lewis. @MrRPLewis learned IT as a trade while enlisted in the US Air Force, serving long enough to earn his pension. Today he brings that same discipline and sharp eye to the page. He lives with his dog, his loyal companion through long reading sessions, and he’s currently writing a science fiction novel of his own. A reviewer who reads like a reader and thinks like a writer. That’s exactly the kind of voice books deserve. Watch for Robert’s reviews coming soon on justreadingnook.com. Please join us in giving him a warm Nook welcome. 📚 .

One big disadvantage indies have that big 5 authors don’t is that the Big 5 traditional publishers have large catalogs of books aligned with their values and reputations. Indies individually are tiny by comparison, small fish in a big ocean where they are hardly noticed. This is what Spotlight on Indie is here to provide- a catalog of books with shared values. Our focus gives the based indie community the branding that readers can count on in the same way the Big 5 do with their catalogs. Our goal is to provide a single place where readers can find these books and with features to keep them returning.

Pretty Face   Pretty face. Why so sad?   Romance, then.   Boys.   They will make you popular.   Leave the other language at the door.   Sweat at the hairline.   The first wet crack in the powder.   Chalk at the lip’s seam.   Grease.   Metal.   Hold the smile.   The glass stops at the skin.   Beneath it lies the jaw, a locked hinge, hot from being held.   Behind the glass, the first second never ends.   A zipper.   A chair shifted.   A voice, too bright, arrives before its words.   Light through the wet eye.   In the throat, almost a name. You could have spoken it.   The room had already begun.   Stay still.   Look pretty.   The bulbs heat the lids.   What enters through the eyes does not thin.   The floor tilts, only beneath you.   Breath remained shallow.   Hands stayed still. The flinch did not show.   Sweet face.   They will ask again why the mouth looks sad.   Some will guess it is a boy.

Nothing   The pills took the edge.   The sleep was long.   The waking was longer.   The room was the same.   The mother was the same.   She stood in the doorway.   The light was behind her.   She did not cross the threshold.   She said the doctor's words.   The words were for the chart.   The chart was not in the room.   The room was for the body.   The body was on the bed.   The bed was the same.   The sheets were the same.   The window was the same.   The light was the same.   The mother did not move.   The mother did not speak again.   The silence was the same.   The silence was not empty.   The silence held the words left unsaid.   The words that were not said were the ones that stayed.   The ones that stayed cut.   The ones that cut stayed.   The mother turned.   The light moved.   The doorway was empty.   The bed was not.   The body was not.   The silence was not.   The silence stayed.   The silence stayed longer than the mother.   The silence stayed longer than the light.   The silence stayed longer than the words.   The silence stayed.   She smiles.   The mouth does not reach the eyes.   She waves.   The hand finishes the shape and drops.   The chair does not move.   The table does not move.   She remains in the seat.

The Waking After the Pills   Sleeping Beauty.   Wake.   The pills did not hold.   How many.   The stomach has nothing in it.   Salt on the tongue.   The head keeps every face.   A hand on the sheet.   Not yours.   The wrist has already been counted.   The mouth at the foot of the bed is open wide.   The question is ready.   The eyes stay on the wall.   The light does not change.   The sheet does not move.   Do you want to sleep again?   The cup is on the table.   The rim remains warm.   No one comes for it.

EVER WONDER WHY BRANDS SPEND SO MUCH ON #PR AGENCIES? Advertising puts your product in front of the customer's wandering eyes, but it doesn't say much. It's limited to a product shot, good copy, and a CTA. PR tells a story. It can put your product in features, editorials, or even incidentals, like a product shot tucked inside an article's main photo. But PR is a different animal. It's about personality and relationships. Publications, digital or print, are biased toward the PR agents and brand managers who are nicer. Be an asshole and your book will never land in that publication. Say goodbye to your PR. Are they playing favorites? Yes and no... but more on yes. Who doesn't like being around a nice person? So here's what authors can borrow from the PR playbook: 1. A thank you goes a long way. A smile or a random kind word gives you the edge. 2. Respect their time. Editors, reviewers, and bloggers are juggling deadlines. Send what they need, when they need it, and keep it short. 3. Follow through. If you promised a review copy, an interview answer, or a cover file, deliver it on time. Reliability gets remembered. 4. Share their work. When they feature you, tag them, repost, and send people their way. Make them look good and they'll want you back. 5. Don't just show up when you need something. Comment on their posts, celebrate their wins, check in now and then. Relationships aren't transactions. 6. Take the "no" gracefully. Today's pass can be next season's feature if you leave the door open. Your book is the product. You are the brand. Be the author people want to work with.

A fascinating review (with it's own stylistic signature) from guest contributor @MrRPLewis Great Book, great review.
A Healer's Prophecy (The Kallos Trilogy Book 1) by Karoline Ettinger ★★★★★ Exceptional One girl. One prophecy. A realm that will either flourish or fall by her hand. At fifteen, Alina walks worlds that age her like storms. Her guardians speak in riddles. Her enemy speaks in order. Hope holds the story together. Compassion keeps it honest. A coming-of-age fantasy that feels like it should be the template for a generation. Reviewed by our guest contributor @MrRPLewis for #JustReadingNook

🚨The Nook is dropping a new editorial piece from @GaiusKonstantin POV: the publisher asked for 80k words. You sent 70k. You thought you ate. You did not. 💀 Writing novellas, novelettes, or short stories? He spills the real tea on where that path actually leads 📚👇
More words, this time about having too few. Today's topic focuses on the challenges faced when writing falls below expected word counts (as well as authors who prefer to write Novellas and shorter works). Read the full editorial piece >>> tr.ee/koijvO #booktwt #WritingCommunity #PublishingTips

The Waltz They Missed   I tried to be one of them.   The body changed before I had agreed.   In the mirror, new angles.   Cold against the palm.   Breath on the glass, and under it a face that arrives late, the mouth still holding a word the room has left behind.   Light on the cheekbone.   A stranger.   They look.   Not at the face. At its line.   Warmth at the nape.   The flinch.   Someone calls it shyness.   Prey.   A deer in the forest that year, caught mid-sentence, already counted.   They waited for the blush.   The mind kept its own weather.   Too fast.   Too lit.   A thought that would not settle.   No prince.   No kiss laid on the mouth like a cure.   The heat went elsewhere.   The next fact.   The pattern that opens if you stay.   The small, bright hit of knowing one more thing.   What I wanted was a chair pulled close and a person who would not look away as I talked for hours about the one subject that keeps the dark from me.   The pulse went there, but it did not return.   They were busy with the vase.   Order.   Symmetry.   The glass gave them the curve and preserved the static state.   They took the shape.   The rest of me stayed where it was.   I kept the waltz.   No partner.   No floor.   The forest held the count.
