I cannot say this enough. Schools cannot hold up the whole world. Housing, jobs, dentistry, doctors: we need other policy areas to work if there’s any chance at improving children’s lives.
"The biggest barriers to social mobility and children's wellbeing lie outside of schools." @miss_mcinerney from our podcast on The Schools Bill. 🎧 Listen to the episode: ifs.org.uk/articles/schools-…

I’m not on here very often now, but I just had to come and rave about The Vulpine by Polly Crosby! I picked it up this morning and have ripped through 100 pages. Can’t wait to finish it! Already fairly sure I’m going to buy a set for tutor reads. #BookTwitter #Literacy #library

My small suggestion to SLT is that if you ever feel like arranging a trip for an entire year group on the last full day of term, then don’t? Ta. X

Thursday sees the kick off of my first ever Library Winter Countdown! Giving away a book a day for ten days, kids just need to complete the quiz/puzzle of the day to enter a raffle which we’ll pull a winner from at the end of each lunch. Can’t wait!

82 kids turned up to this today. We had a whole library countdown from ten before I pulled the winning name out of the raffle, as well as a tabletop drumroll! So much fun. Created a real buzz in the #library - can’t wait for tomorrow!

🚨 School libraries & librarians are vital to education! We stand with @CILIPinfo, @CILIPSLG , @GreatSchLibs, @UKSLA & @ASCELUK in advocating for their role in the schools. Properly resourced libraries break barriers & equip young people for future success.
CILIP, SLG, the Great School Libraries Campaign, SLA and ASCEL have written a joint response to the DfE's Curriculum & Assessment Review, highlighting the power and potential of school libraries and librarians. Read full story and find out more: cilip.org.uk/news/news.asp?i…

So I hoofed my way through The Invasion by @TheCallYA within 48 hours of owning it! Just in time, too, as all the gorgeous new books I ordered for the library last week arrived. Making a start on what promises to be a delectable read by @hafsahfaizal - A Tempest of Tea!

"These benefits [of reading] are becoming a kind of invisible privilege. This has gone on long enough. The bad news is that we are at risk of losing a generation. The good news is that the solution is in our hands" - Children's Laureate @frankcottrell_b #GrowAGenerationOfReaders

8/9 A fully funded school library run by a qualified librarian can change lives. It’s proved time and time again. Every school needs a library and every library a librarian. That’s one way to get books in children’s hands and encouraging a life-long love of reading...

This has been reshared a lot recently. Many #schoollibrarians are sharing stats which show that reading in their schools is not in decline-quite the reverse. The evidence is clear: having a librarian in school can build and embed a reading culture. Follow us to find out more.
⚠️Reading enjoyment has fallen across all ages.⚠️ The sharpest decline is among pupils aged 11-14 - from 40.4% in 2023 to 30.7% in 2024. As children transition to secondary school, their reading engagement dips - a trend that is worsening. Learn more: literacytrust.org.uk/researc…

The decimation of libraries probably affects under 5s - the age where reading for pleasure is established - more than any other group. Books for little kids are short and expensive, but you used to be able to go to a library and take 5 different ones home every week.

Just a bookseller, standing here, pleading journos to remember that children's books can and should be included in your book of the year round ups 💕

Update! Finished it. What a stonking read that was! Cue much sitting around, twiddling thumbs until book two turns up on my doorstep…
So I’m on page 153 of The Call by Peadar O’Guillan - @TheCallYA - and I don’t think I’ve actually taken a breath since I started. Even Eddie the cat is cowering in terror (or being annoyed that I’m disturbing his sleep, one or the other). Help!

Finally, FINALLY, getting around to Fallout by @WelshDragonParr - just under halfway through and I already know it’s a ‘finish in one sitting’ book! How do you make them so consistently unputdownable? ❤️

Our school only opened in 2019 and I started the library from scratch, so I’ve not had to do lots of weeding yet. But this week has been my first big weed since I started, and there is MUCH excitement amongst students about how I’m getting rid of the withdrawn stock🥰 #libraries
