Just to be clear: Before Omicron we had: ~6k Hospitalised Covid Patients ~600 new admissions per day And we were not coping! Now we have: ~14k Hospitalised Covid Patients ~1,800 new admissions per day ~ 100k less staff And This Government has decided to do…nothing. Right?

🧵 If ever proof was needed that the Government is asleep at the wheel with this staff shortage crisis, the Vaccine Minister's non-answers this morning just about sum it up. /1
Vaccines Minister Maggie Throup doesn't know how many hospitals have critical incident. To Sky: “It is fast-moving... it would be wrong of me to say a number, because shortly there could be another one, or another Trust could actually say ‘no, we’re back on track now, we’re OK’”

Vaccines Minister Maggie Throup on @SkyNews doesn’t have a clue how many Briton’s are in self isolation or how many NHS trusts have declared critical incidents. What is this Government basing its planning on??

The first hospitals to get hammered by Omicron and it is being driven by a shortage of staff.
BREAKING: A very serious situation at hospitals across Lincolnshire tonight as @ULHT_News declares a 'critical incident' over "extreme and unprecedented" staff shortages. It says it is "unable to maintain safe staffing levels" leading to "compromised care" across its sites:

This is a very concerning development on top of what was already a crisis. I’ve requested a briefing as soon as possible, and will be keeping up the pressure on @sajidjavid to provide emergency funding for our ambulance service, and a short-term emergency strategy to save lives.
Replying to @ShaunLintern
In the West Midlands, @OFFICIALWMAS has warned patients are coming to severe harm because 999 calls are being 'stacked' and left waiting with no ambulance able to respond.

There are nowhere near enough lateral flow tests for Covid-19 in England to allow the government’s policy of their indiscriminate use. Access to tests must be prioritised and clear guidance given on their use. My article for The Guardian. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

If correct, this is damning. In short: it *looks like* the government is relying on just *one* distributor for all lateral flow test kits and they’re closed for chunks of time over the holiday! #WhereIsJohnson #whereIsJavid
I looked into *why* the supply of Covid-19 rapid tests has been so badly disrupted in the UK. TL;DR: All of the distribution is being handled by a single company which will be closed for 7-8+ days around Christmas and New Years' Eve and therefore shortages will persist. 🧵👇🏾

Asking students and St John Ambulance first aiders to provide hospital care is the very definition of ‘overwhelmed’.
NHS England said essential bedside care could be provided by a wider pool of staff including students, therapists, care assistants and volunteers with a health background. Trusts also told to consider using St John Ambulance staff and retired NHS staff.

With >300k classrooms in England, putting an air purifier in each one would cost around half the PM's royal yacht vanity project. Yet all he can manage is 7k classrooms. Johnson is taking parents, pupils and teachers for fools when he claims they're a priority.
We’re providing an additional 7,000 air cleaning units for early years settings, schools & colleges. This will improve ventilation in teaching spaces and help to minimise disruption to face-to-face education.

I'm just not sure the government has a clue what's actually happening in hospitals right now. We're paring back services because there aren't enough nurses. We're putting extra beds in offices, discharge lounges, broom cupboards. We're all stretched too thin. It's crisis mode.

Patients in A&E @NGHnhstrust have experienced long waits for a bed, data seen by @thesundaytimes shows some have been in the dept for over 40 hours, dozens more for longer than 12 hours. The A&E at times ran with just 9 out of the 20 nurses it should have.

At Lewisham Hospital in southeast London on Wednesday half of the unit’s nurses were off sick, prompting the trust to close some cubicles and redeploy staff from other parts of the hospital to keep patients safe. It has also cancelled less urgent operations.
