As always, @PortlandBirdObs delivered some good scarcities during 14-16/10 with a remarkably well marked Porter's Rustic, the gangly Toadflax Pearl (A. catalaunalis) and Slender Burnished Brass (to ORI, two days prior) - my fifth of this stunner in a week!
@MigrantMothUK
Too busy in calls and workshops for any real birding but managed to jam the Siberian Chiffchaff being rung on 15/10 and then 2 Yellow-browed Warblers (one much yellow than the other) early this morning 16/10 @PortlandBirdObs , thanks to MC, JH and the whole team:
Freshwater Bay @PortlandBirdObs overnight 15/16 Oct. with 2 MV, 1 Lepi-LED, 1 ORI lure - highlights were 2 Slender Burnished Brass (to ORI) and my second E. ocellea in two weeks; also 4 Vestal, 4 SBS, 1 White-speck, 2 Pearly Underwing, 3 P. vitrealis
@MigrantMothUK
Freshwater Bay @PortlandBirdObs overnight 14/15 Oct. with 2 MV, 1 actinic and 1 Lepi-LED -highlights were a very worn Gem, 1 Tebenna micalis and 1 Small Marbled (first for a few weeks); also 3 Vestal, 3 SBS, 1 Clancy's Rustic. 4 P. vitrealis
@MigrantMothUK
Slender Burnished Brass - W Cornwall, 11/10/26. It was hard to get the angle right to get the golden sheen on the wings, without it looking 'just yellow'. These are the best I managed:
Slender Burnished Brass - 3 to ORI lure in West Cornwall between 00.00 and 03.00 this morning (11/10/26) thanks to a tip off from @saturdaycatbird - my most wanted moth, so well worth the drive!
Trapping at Freshwater Bay @PortlandBirdObs with
@saturdaycatbird on night 8-9/10 was relatively quiet in strong wind and rain (4 traps but no MV) but still produced a pristine Golden Twinspot, 3 White-speck, 2 SBS, 1 Vestal, 1 vitrealis, 1 Convolvulus HM..
Mniotype sp - either occidentalis (no English name) or solieri (Bedrule Brocade), to light by @TonyJMorris at St Margarets Bay, East Kent in the last few days. So either a first or second for Britain! DNA will hopefully confirm:
Southern Bridled Green @PortlandBirdObs photographed 08/10/26 with a Brindled Green for comparison taken on the same day at Dartford, thanks to @dartfordtrapper - a handful of records from Dorset and a recent one from Scilly. @saturdaycatbird
Sykes's Warbler at Girdleness recently - I've been waiting a long time to catch up with this species; this one showed well in the patches of scrub on the north side of the headland - uniform tertials are as good as any feature [AI for twig removal first image only]:

Juniper Carpet - 6/10/26 - at least 6 seen at a small nature reserve in East Oxfordshire with @saturdaycatbird - also here a Plumed Fanfoot (widespread dispersal in the last few days) and very worn Juniper Pug:
Lesser Emperor @PortlandBirdObs on 4/10/26; many thanks to MC who brought this back to the obs after it had caught itself in a mistnet. I haven't had much time to look for dragonflies this year, so nice to see this at the end of the season:
Highlights from trapping overnight 3-4/10/26 at Freshwater Bay, @PortlandBirdObs included a pristine Brindled Ochre (now very scarce in Dorset), 4 Golden Twinspot and a worn Silver-spotted Veneer (Euchromius ocellea); also here 15+ Palpita vitrealis, 1 Bordered Straw, 3 Vestal
A selection of moths today from @PortlandBirdObs - the rare Maize Wainscot, 1 of 2 Ni Moths seen and a fine purple Purple Marbled, all of which were trapped at the observatory:
Great album launch for @adultdvdmenu in Southampton tonight; looking forward to seeing them again in Cambridge with @birtmonkey - sound is a bit crap on my phone - this track includes the line ‘tried birdwatching but I couldn’t see shit!’ See them if you can - phenomenal.
Fisher's Estuarine Moth - Kent - 29/09/26 - saw about 15 of these very local and stunning moths tonight on a @savebutterflies survey, with @dartfordtrapper:
Semipalmated Sandpiper at Fishtail Lagoon, Pennington - 26/09/26 - An enjoyable couple of hours spent with this peep today, the sixth I've seen in Hampshire and four of those have been on the same two pools! @LymKeyRanger @HOSbirding
25-26/9/26 - Dorset - Banded Pine Carpet -after the early success with the Wainscot, @dartfordtrapper, @markhows and I moved east to a pine plantation where an overnight trapping effort produced two of this recent colonist, although they seemed to be at the end of the season:
