Austin police officers arrested a deaf, elderly woman at ABIA for trespassing, but she just misunderstood instructions from a ticket clerk. Because she’s elderly and deaf. She spent 3 nights in the Travis County Jail, where a jailer broke her arm. She wasn’t taken to the ER.

Judy Heumann dedicated her life to the fight for civil rights—starting as a young organizer at Camp Jened and later helping lead the disability rights movement. Michelle and I were fortunate to work with Judy over the years, and are thinking of her family and friends.

It's time that disabled people get care in their homes instead of institutions. It's time that care workers get paid living wages. We can finally get this done. #CareCantWait #sotu2023
