So the burqa and niqab are “un-British” and “unwanted”?
You know what is un-British? Telling women what they can and can’t wear.
This isn’t about safety — it’s about control.

This time last year, Somalia government officials targeted the late Abdinasir Dahable, carrying out a campaign of coordinated harassment and threats. On February 18, 2024, he was found dead in his Mogadishu apartment, showing clear signs of brutal torture.
Today, we stand outside the Somalia Embassy in solidarity with his widow, Dr. Suad, and his two beautiful daughters, demanding justice.
#Somaliland WILL NOT let one of its treasured sons’ deaths be in vain!

In this thread, you will witness relentless hostility towards Somaliland from staunch communist tribalist followers. But let’s speak in facts, not propaganda.
Somaliland was among the first recognized nations in Africa, long before colonial borders were redrawn. Before that, it was a sovereign kingdom with its own rich history. The genocide against its people was not just a tragedy—it was a turning point, a catalyst that shattered the unratified political colonization imposed by Somalia under the influence of Nazi Italy, which sought to use Somalia as a pawn for future influence. Instead of submission, it ignited a 28-year struggle against dictatorship.
Since reclaiming its independence in 1991, Somaliland has remained a beacon of peace, democracy, and resilience. It has rebuilt from the ashes, its cities, once carpet-bombed by the Somali dictatorship to serve as a warning, now stand as symbols of defiance and progress.
A re-recognized Somaliland is not just an acknowledgment of historical truth; it is a strategic necessity. It holds the key to stabilizing trade routes in the Red Sea, a benefit that extends far beyond its borders to Africa as a whole and especially East Africa. It has stood firm despite being surrounded by instability, pirates and Al-Shabaab in the South and East, in the North West a dictatorial regime in Djibouti, yet it remains unshaken. Somaliland is not just a nation; it is the UNCUT DIAMOND of East Africa, tested by fire and proven by time.
“We hope that the United States may be the first country to recognize Somaliland.” — H.E. Abdirahman Abdillahi at #WorldGovSummit , on the importance of international recognition for Somaliland’s future.

A huge round of applause to @kasim_wise for his exceptional work as the director of The Untold Story of Somalilanders in East London: Tower Hamlets. Also, a heartfelt thank you to @TowerHamletsNow and the brilliant team at @KaydSomaliArts for their unwavering commitment, dedication, and hard work in bringing this powerful story to life!
The event was a huge success with a sold-out screening at Rich Mix and an incredible turnout.
It was so inspiring to see Somalilanders from across London and the Tower Hamlets community come together, connecting and engaging in important conversations.
The documentary highlights the rich history of Somalilander seafarers who helped shape East London. It also showed the resilience and bravery of the SNM in their fight for freedom and justice. On top of that, it shared the untold stories of the Isaaq Genocide—stories that are so important and need to be kept alive for future generations.
Thank you, Kasim, for bringing this powerful story to life. We can’t wait to see what’s next!
