I think morality and overt connection to real life has displaced fantasy and empathy as the lens through which many people experience stories No race or faction in Warcraft gets to cast the first stone (except the flawless Tauren, naturally!)
Did everyone just forget that the Orcs, Thrall included, are invaders to Azeroth?

Where modern WoW story struggles is in selling the differences as meaningful, and selling how hard seeing past them can be But tough to do when even the writers are likely playing the moral balancing game their heads like a lot of players do

To be honest I think it largely speaks to a world that doesn’t want that story? The newly globalising world was finding common ground, especially across the internet, with hope and wonder Different world today, black and white, scared of uncertainty and synthesis

fuckkkkk the Labyrinth is almost really good fucking god damn it any and all promise snuffed out by unplayable day 1s and a deeply rotten difficulty/class design if I were a Blizz dev I think I’d have a manifesto half-done already

real talk, modern WoW is a tough sell at $15/mo with this quality of output they're so lucky MMO players are genre-captured and don't seek out better we live in an era of excellence, if only you have the will to be curious and curate your own experiences (play Ace Combat 8!!!)

I'm a single-player gameplay/story/experience focused guy in general, so that's where I'll gravitate outside of MMOs but I have friends that will hop around games for group sessions and they get SO much bang for their buck with MMO-like or ARPG-ish indies it's crazy

this story feels like uninterrogated first draft thoughts rushed out with zero feedback or iteration gimme the writer’s room transcripts I need to know what goes on in there

it also contributes to the idea of it as a competitive esports-type production, which I don’t like for Forever and, finally, I think it enables a culture of sandbagging and crying for instant changes, instead of patient acceptance letting devs slowly make calls for next patch

imagine being a dev and nothing ever ever ever being done, always fiddle, always tweak, always change subjectively based on reams of feedback sounds exhausting, and far from conducive to good, level-headed decision-making

I’ve long thought this about modern’s approach to post-patch tuning I understand the logic, but it feels like building on shifting sand, a crutch for devs to never truly have conviction in their work with a 1.0 eternal early access vibes

people clowning on him but he’s not wrong the illusion of a world is broken by impermanence and the hand of the developer of course beta needs changes, that’s the point, but a constant micro-adjustment approach will change the vibe of live not necessarily worse! but different
Don't wanna be that guy but I'll be that guy. Anyone else feel like even in Beta all this tuning they're doing is kind of retailish? Like every week reading specific changes and notes. Obviously it's based on feedback and they're doing a great job, but could this turn into like our situation where they can't please every class and spec and we just wait every couple weeks for "weaker" specs to be buffed or builds in this case? Maybe I wasn't paying attention in 2019 but I felt like we never got this many tuning and adjustments. Maybe at launch it just be chill as is

to cover my bases: obviously big patches don’t count I think there has to be a baseline of what the game is, can’t be constantly fiddling to shift the meta or nerf/buff too much without risking how people feel about their progress, wrong genre for it

Everyone talks about games in broad strokes, and the deep, deep artistry is rarely mentioned even in proper reviews. On that, Ace Combat 8 is legitimately one of the best games I have ever played. The technical mastery of every field is just beyond belief.

"as a sky-touched shen'dorei elf" "I can certainly understand how easily intolerance and prejudice can take root." I really wonder how quest writers are trained and what oversight they're under. But hey, at least shipping with obvious first drafts is accurate to Classic.
Honestly, it does break my immersion a little bit...

finished Control Resonant nobody moves like Remedy, excellent PS3-era action game with more artistic flair and better storytelling chops than most studios real game lovers too, nowhere near Kojima or Yoko Taro-tier, but Resonant knows it's a game and not a movie with tasks

time for a mild Forever doompost: we're in a honeymoon period atm, some of their designs bite off WAY more than I think they can chew and the post-launch months are going to birth the most brutal WoW discourse we'll ever see in our lifetime as people spend time at 60

the team almost certainly intuit the ramifications of many of their decisions ahead of time and have "fix X problem as it arises" on the calendar for mid-Nov/Dec but it won't be easy, we're gonna learn that WoW developed the way it did originally for a lot of very good reasons

I think a huge amount of it is fueled by hope, pure hope that people WILL play the way they ask them to (social! horizontal! journey!) and while I think that's hugely preferable to modern WoW's defensive design, it's also going to hit the road hard and I pray it pans out

Nuance hat on here. The game experience is exceptional! People are camping, grouping, exploring, etc. The arguing is because people want to defend it. We already lost this to 'evolution' once, and Blizzard clearly know enough now to avoid it, but people are rightfully afraid.

Players will unwittingly BEG Blizzard to ruin the game. It is Blizzard's job to understand the downstream effects of what feedback they choose to action. I trust this Forever team based on their decisions and rationale so far, but I completely get being militant anti-QoL.

Doesn't excuse being a complete fucking moron about it, or being needlessly aggressive, or refusing to read the spirit of what people actually post, but from a sort of sociological/anthropological perspective it makes perfect sense.
