1/2 It has been 8 years since the Government apologised for the treatment of people caught up in the Windrush scandal.
Yet for many survivors, the long and complicated process to secure compensation means their struggle for justice is not yet over.
Legal support can mean the difference between justice being served and denied. One claimant initially received nothing. With legal support, they were offered more than £80,000 in compensation.
That’s why I’ve signed this letter calling on the Home Office to deliver on its commitment to the survivors and fund independent legal advice for applicants to the Windrush Compensation Scheme.

Andy, we know just the policy prescription: public ownership. 😉
Water run for the people who pay the bills. Democratic accountability. Money reinvested in fixing pipes and cleaning rivers.
Happy to pop round with the notes. Some of us have kept them handy.

I recently called on the government to expand the Healthy Start benefit for low income families.
In response, the Minister tells me that the department is “considering whether Healthy Start should be made permanently available to households subject to no recourse to public funds.”
This is encouraging news. Expanding this support would be a small step towards helping build Britain's resilience and ensure that nobody is priced out of healthy food.
I’ll continue to keep pressure up to make sure “consideration” becomes action.
With food prices continuing to rise, it is more important than ever to take a strategic approach to food policy.
A resilient food system is not just one that produces enough food. It is one that ensures everyone can afford a healthy diet, even when climate and economic shocks put pressure on household budgets.
Expanding Healthy Start would be a practical and effective first step.
That's why I've written to the Health Secretary, calling for Healthy Start to be strengthened and expanded, helping to build Britain's resilience and ensure that nobody is priced out of healthy food.

Peter will be relived.
Paul much less so.
The wealthy will still be laughing at all of us.

PLEASE SHARE WIDELY. Today in Lviv military veteran Vladyslav Starodubstev (who now works in veterans' rehabilitation) was assaulted by a gang of far-right thugs. He was about to give a talk about the history of the Lviv left 🧵

This is a cracking listen if you want to understand the background to the ‘45 govt’s prog and how it came about.
Understanding it helps work out what we need to do to replace the current social-economic ‘wiring’.

After the crippling 2008 public bank bailouts - you’d think the banking lobby would choose its arguments more carefully.
If banks warn that taxing their profits means less lending, that strengthens the case for a more diverse banking sector.
Build on our mutuals. Create local savings banks modelled on Germany’s Sparkassen, alongside publicly owned national and regional investment banks. Give businesses more places to turn.
We grant commercial banks the extraordinary power to create money through lending. That should come with responsibilities.
So, perhaps sit this one out and take the hit - because you still owe us many times over.
To be fair I’ve been banging on about this for some time.
12 years at least.

Germany's Merkel:
I think there is a difference between Die Linke and the AfD.
There are members of Die Linke who hold views I cannot share, particularly when it comes to antisemitism.
But generally speaking, I would say their views are, by and large, not contrary to our constitution.
With the AfD, I have far greater doubts.
I would have made that compromise with the Left Party, and I believe we should not cooperate with the AfD.

Coventry City Council’s decision to renew its £750,000 children’s services contract with Palantir is the wrong choice.
Palantir has carried out a deliberate strategy of embedding itself deeper and deeper into our public services. Its goal to make us totally dependent on them, so they can help themselves to our most valuable data.
But as the Mayor of London has shown, local authorities can say no. Coventry Council should follow his lead.
That’s why I’ve signed @zarahsultana’s motion urging them to cancel the contract.
What was the outcome of Palantir’s legal action against the Mayor?
It didn’t establish unlawful action or policy, or that the decision should be overturned.
Nor did it secure the contract or recover its costs.
Those are the facts.
I recently marked National Suicide Memorial Day for Health and Care Workers by signing @catecclesstour's parliamentary motion.
ONS data indicates that an average of four healthcare workers die by suicide each week, a sobering reminder of the pressures faced by NHS staff.
The motion recognises the work of Doctors in Distress and NHS Practitioner Health in supporting healthcare professionals and calls on the Government to reaffirm its commitment to protecting staff wellbeing and mental health.
