#StayWellinResearch 43. The Success Illusion When you look at other CVs, all you see is a series of successes. It seems as though the person has never had a paper rejected or any failures. The reality is usually much different. From 52 Ways to Stay Well. buff.ly/2RkaHPn

#PhD students, don't get discouraged if your studies are too far from an immediate impact or application! You don't have to do the science that everyone is doing today. Instead, your today's research can become the CRUCIAL contribution to the science in the far future. ▫️ Here are some example: 1️⃣ In 1970s, Saul Teukolsky was a PhD student at Caltech and worked an entirely hypothetical problem that had no connection with reality - perturbation of black holes. In 2016, scientists reported gravitational waves from merging black holes. After that, his old PhD work became quite popular because black holes finally became experimentally measurable objects. 2️⃣ In 1958, Hummers published a method to prepare graphite oxide. No one seems to have been noticing it until a Nobel prize was awarded for graphene in 2010. Now, this is cited >25,000 times. ▫️ In #science, it’s pretty rare for your work to have a real immediate impact. Impact often takes time. This is why it’s important to be driven by curiosity. Without curiosity, previous generations wouldn’t have made so much progress. Exploration of the unknown, hypothetical theories and "weird" experiments from the past largely make the science of today possible. #AcademicTwitter

#Perfectionism: Have no fear of perfection - you'll never achieve it. Just do your best. In research there is no perfect. Knowledge is contested. Reviewers disagree. There are limitations in all research. So do you best and get it done. #PhDchat #ECRchat #postdoc #PhDforum

Feel like an imposter? 1. Realise imposter feelings are normal. Most of us have occasional imposter feelings. But it's important to remember that feeling like an imposter does not mean you are an imposter. From: The Imposter Syndrome buff.ly/2m9RArr #PhDchat #ECRchat

When someone has paper published or wins an award or gets promoted you only see the final success. You don't see the earlier rejections, revisions and setbacks. You might assume they found it easy but that is rarely so. @sylviaduckworth #PhDchat #ECRchat #postdoc #gradschool

So, I decided to see how well ChatGPT can help in researching the origin of particular facts. It turns out that AI will, with conviction, lie to you and completely make up sources. I mean inventing papers that don't exist and giving them a journal, issue, page, and even PMID.

"Each slide you show should have a title, and the title should be the conclusion you wish us to draw from the slide" Yes, exactly. Even if some self-proclaimed talk "gurus" hate this. journals.biologists.com/jcs/…

Proud of my PhD student @ParasJa20 for leading this study on dynamics of EMT reversibility, hypothesising how the decay of epigenetic memory can allow for reversible EMT even for long-term EMT induction. Exciting new experiments by Mike Toneff & @LabTaube. royalsocietypublishing.org/d…
