A lot of people have asked me: why are the govt trying to undo the edu policies that have made England so successful?
Latest Substack does not attempt to answer that question, because I don't know the answer!
But it has some related comment.

Most #ScienceOfReading training tells you what to teach. It rarely tells you how kids actually learn that material or how to design lessons so it sticks. That's the gap Dr. Paige Pullen's new book, The Canon of Literacy, sets out to close. View the sample here ⬇️

2025 PISA analysis:
"[T]he strongest readers of complex digital material were not the students with the greatest exposure to technology, but those who had read books longer than 100 pages. Reading deeply requires students to sustain attention, construct meaning, connect ideas, and critically reflect on information, precisely the capacities they need to navigate a world overflowing with digital content and AI-generated answers."

This podcast made me so angry. It’s beyond belief that school administrators can stare down failing data and insist on more of the same from teachers on the front-line who know better and want to do better.
Suffer the little children.

The Understanding Dyslexia microcredential has officially been live for ONE WEEK and we already have 95 educators enrolled! 🥳
One of the best things has been reading the thoughtful responses, reflections, and assignments submitted by educators across Illinois. Their curiosity, commitment to learning, and desire to better support students with dyslexia has been incredibly encouraging. My heart is full! 💛 These educators give me so much hope for what is possible when we continue investing in teacher knowledge, and ultimately, what that means for students with dyslexia and their families.
