UK and NL sleep research friends: Would anyone like to join me for a bike ride to the @ESRS_Sleep Sleep Europe conference?
Let’s make this conference as sustainable, and as fun, as possible! #esrssustainable2026
Ready for the Arctic expedition – can we get the fundraiser over the finish line? ❄️☀️👨🔬

Crushed Ice, Crushed Shoulder – An Unintended Self-Experiment Emergency Medicine
After four months of rehab following an accident, I'm back on the OxArctic100 team heading to Svalbard! Thanks to everyone for your support - every contribution helps.

Friends at FENS, please join our networking event for sleep researchers on Thursday evening. Sadly, I cannot join this year but it will certainly be a fantastic evening.
Hands-on Expedition Medicine Workshop, with Dr. Melina Tatalias – a Swiss helicopter rescue doctor – OxArctic100 medics as co-instructors. The workshop is open to anyone interested in gaining essential skills for handling accidents in the wilderness.
Friends, I'd be grateful for a small donation to our Oxford Centennial Artic Expedition Project (even just 5$, £ or €). The success of our crowdfunding campaign is a key indicator for major sponsors if it is worth supporting our endeavours. Thank you!

I'm delighted to announce my selection for the 2026 Oxford Centennial Arctic Expedition to Svalbard!
It would be wonderful to see many of you at one of the launch events on the weekend of 22–23 November (more details in the attached posters).
Our latest work shows that local modulation of cortical activity can bidirectionally change the amount of global sleep:

We welcome any feedback on this preprint!
If anyone has a spare ticket for tonight’s #WorldSleep2025 gala dinner or knows of a cancellation, I‘d be keen to buy it.

If you’re curious about the feasibility of modulating sleep in humans, you might find our new perspective "stimulating".

Written with my wonderful colleagues @inesviolante @val_jaramillo and Michael Song.
Important work by @NatalieHauglund and the @NedergaardLab providing a mechanistic link between infraslow oscillations, blood and CSF dynamics, and clearance during NREM sleep.
Of particular note for clinicians is the impairment of these dynamics by zolpidem.
Out today in @CellCellPress !
We show that oscillations in norepinephrine and cerebral blood volume are the missing pieces that link NREM sleep to clearance of waste from the brain 🧠💤 cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092…

Exciting work by the @anita_luthi lab!
In addition to the beautiful electrophysiology and imaging, the second part of the paper provides fascinating insights into the influence of the sleep environment on sleep physiology. Congratulations @alejandrosoriof and everyone involved!
Replying to @LabLuthi
@LabLuthi uncovers a dual role of #locus @coeruleus in #sleep -> 1) its strict gatekeeper role for the sleep cycle 2) the partial brain-body arousals it generates. Powerful minds behind all this: @alejandrosoriof @GFoustoukos @CardisRomain

So proud of the @mertonboatclub members, who just finished their impressive 24-hour 'ergathon' raising funds for @Homeless_Oxford to support their vital work throughout this winter.
A few more donations will help to meet reach funding target:
