Understanding dementia requires integrating genetics, the exposome, and biological aging. At the ReDLat2 Annual Meeting (October 19–21, Santiago, Chile), we will explore how genetic susceptibility interacts with environmental and social exposures to shape brain aging and dementia risk. ReDLat2 will focus on developing multimodal aging clocks that integrate genetics, neuroimaging, molecular biomarkers, and exposome data to capture individual differences in brain health and disease. Join us in Santiago. More info soon.

Culture shapes health across the lifespan. Today, we published two papers in @TheLancet on cultural engagement and arts as a global health resource. For me, this matters because cultural engagement can act as a salutogenic factor, helping prevent disease while actively supporting health and resilience. This may be particularly important for healthy aging, brain health, and dementia. The first paper outlines key priorities for advancing the science of arts and health, from mechanisms and cultural context to stronger global evidence. The second develops roadmaps for translating this knowledge into research, public health, clinical practice, and policy. Congrats to @NishaSajnani & Daisy Fancourt, and the whole team. Delighted to see these publications highlighted at #UNGA. @j_artshealthlab @CULTURUNNERS @UCL_SBB

Our speech may capture how we are aging across brain, molecular, cognitive, and social dimensions. We developed speech age clocks using data from nearly 3,000 people at @ScienceAdvances . Accelerated speech aging was associated with worse cognitive and clinical outcomes, older brain and epigenetic age, higher p-tau217, and more adverse social exposome profiles; it also differentiated healthy aging from Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia. Congrats to @HernHdezL , @AdolfoMGarcia , and the whole team! science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…

Today is a special day. A landmark opportunity for the next generation of brain health leaders and an extraordinary chance to transform local ideas into global impact. The @bankimoon_org , @InstitutCerveau , and Vascular Brain Health Institute are launching the #Global_Brain_Care_Scholars Program, supported by @BrainLat, @GBHI_Fellows & @braincarescore. Deeply honored that BrainLat will coordinate the selection of scholars from Latin America, while GBHI will also support their education, mentorship, and leadership development. Today, the Neuro Climate Working Group launches its Neuro Climates Science & Policy Report, the first report dedicated exclusively to the links between climate change, exposome, and brain health.
Bringing together evidence from 50+ global experts, we examined how extreme heat, air pollution, extreme weather, food insecurity, environmental contamination, and vector-borne diseases affect our brains, while outlining priorities for research, policy, and action. Happy to have contributed to this collective effort led by @burcin_ikiz , the lead authors, the expert committee, and the entire NCWG team!

Can we rethink the future of dementia riskS and prevention globally? Today in @TheLancet , we propose 5 priorities: 1. Expand the risk landscape: identify and test emerging exposome, biomedical, social, and gene–environment factors that may reshape current models; 2. Capture complex risk interactions: move beyond isolated or additive factors to non-linear, synergistic patterns; 3. Bridge individual and structural prevention: address unequal risk exposure and structural constraints alongside weighted individual choice; 4. Broaden evidence standards for multimodal risks: complement RCTs with natural experiments, policy evaluations, mechanistic studies, Mendelian randomization, and implementation science; and 5. Build glocal infrastructures: locally led and globally connected research where future dementia burden will increasingly concentrate. Great to develop this piece with @nanosanta; Thanks @BeaGPerezNievas for the excellent editorial handling, and @Gill_Livingston for the reply &  openness: thelancet.com/journals/lance…

Can economic interventions improve brain health? Cash transfers, school feeding, unemployment grants, social pensions, and sovereign debt relief may be particularly relevant for underserved populations. In Nature Health, we develop an intergenerational social welfare agenda embedded in brain health strategies to reduce economic and health risks across generations in Africa.
