Legal certainty is now a defining feature in EU-Mexico economic relations.
The modernised EU-Mexico Global Agreement, signed on 22 May, introduces a new investment dispute resolution framework applicable across all 27 EU member states.
The relevance is not only legal. It reflects a broader effort to strengthen long term economic integration under a more predictable investment environment.
For European companies, this has practical implications. As businesses reassess supply chains, manufacturing capacity, market diversification and North American access, investment decisions increasingly depend on regulatory clarity and institutional confidence.
Mexico is no longer only a trade partner. It is a long term operational platform for European industry and investment.

EU-Mexico agreement strengthens market access and trade opportunities for European companies.
During the eighth EU-Mexico Summit in Mexico City, the EU and Mexico officially signed the renewed bilateral framework composed of the Interim Trade Agreement (iTA) and the Modernised Global Agreement (MGA). This marks the most significant update to the relationship since the original 2000 agreement.
The new agreement introduces three major changes:
• Mexico will remove almost all tariffs on EU imports
• Technical barriers to trade will be reduced
• Strategic cooperation will expand across digital transformation, climate, security, justice, and sustainable development
For European companies, the implications extend beyond trade volumes. The agreement strengthens the long term commercial and operational relationship between Europe and Mexico.

The signing of the EU-Mexico Modernised Global Agreement in 2026 marks more than a diplomatic milestone. It reshapes the commercial conditions.
In 2025, EU–Mexico trade surpassed €86 billion. Mexico remains the second largest economy in Latin America and one of the fifteen largest economies globally, with a population of roughly 130 million people.
For European companies, the agreement signals changing trade, investment, and regulatory conditions between both regions. It also reinforces Mexico’s role in long term supply chain and market expansion strategies.
The companies preparing now will move with greater clarity later. Knowleds supports companies assessing market entry, institutional conditions, and cross border expansion between Europe and Mexico.

The EU-Mexico Modernised Global Agreement opens new opportunities for European service providers.
Business services, financial services, telecommunications, and transport are among the sectors expected to benefit the most. The agreement supports fairer operating conditions, easier market access, and fewer administrative barriers for companies working across both regions.
The agreement also maintains regulatory safeguards in areas such as labour, environmental standards, and public services.
For European companies assessing Mexico, this creates greater clarity for long term planning, investment, and regional expansion strategies.

New momentum for EU-Mexico trade!
This morning we discussed the modernised EU-Mexico agreement with policymakers, business leaders & experts, and what it means for European companies and trade diversification.
“As businesses, we need to be ready to seize the opportunities that this agreement will create,” highlighted our DG Markus J. Beyrer.
The agreement goes far beyond its predecessor, strengthening cooperation across economic, political, social and strategic areas, and opening new opportunities for businesses on both sides.
With the European Parliament plenary vote scheduled for early July, the process is moving ahead at speed.
Many thanks to all speakers and participants for the excellent discussion!
Europe and Mexico are entering a new phase of economic cooperation, reshaping trade across key industries.
For European companies, it creates new opportunities in one of Latin America’s most dynamic markets for trade and investment. All sectors trading between the EU and Mexico are expected to benefit, directly or indirectly, from the modernised agreement.
The sectors expected to see the most immediate gains include agri-food, machinery, transport equipment, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals. These industries benefit from greater regulatory certainty, clearer rules of origin, and simplified procedures that reduce trade friction.
Mexico continues to strengthen its position as a regional hub for trade, investment, and industrial partnerships with Europe. Companies assessing their positioning today will be better prepared to move with clarity tomorrow.

A new chapter in EU–Mexico trade relations. How can your company benefit from it?
On 22 May the European Union and Mexico signed the modernised Global Agreement, creating new conditions for trade, investment, and industrial cooperation between both regions.
The agreement combines two key instruments: the Interim Trade Agreement (iTA), which accelerates commercial benefits, and the Modernised Global Agreement, designed to strengthen long-term cooperation across strategic sectors.
For European SMEs and mid-sized companies, this framework reduces barriers, strengthens institutional cooperation, and opens new pathways for expansion into Mexico across strategic sectors aligned with the EU Global Gateway Investment agenda.
