"Institutions provide continuity, memory, and resilience across generations and geographies. ... Without African institutions to preserve, digitize, defend, and promote our rich cultural legacies and heritages, we risk obsolescence."
While the world debates restitution, Africa’s own heritage institutions are collapsing. The question is no longer who took our past, but who is keeping it alive. africasacountry.com/2025/11/…

Just wrapped up work for the day and must appreciate just how much I rely on @PMG_SA . Parly monitoring work can so easily be under-appreciated, but it's *SO* crucial and enables so many of us to do what we do.

Welcome to Issue 222 of The Continent
Lesotho’s arrest of a former South African navy officer has reignited a long-simmering border dispute, and historic territorial claims — echoing similar struggles across Africa.
bit.ly/222_TC

ALT The entire background is a hand-drawn map focused on Lesotho and the surrounding South African provinces. The map shows Lesotho as a landlocked shape in the centre, with its border illustrated as a dramatic, jagged cliff line—almost like a raised wall—emphasising its separation from the surrounding territory. Around Lesotho, the names of South Africa’s provinces are labelled. Free State to the west and north, KwaZulu-Natal to the east, Eastern Cape to the south, Northern Cape and North West further out. Gauteng and Mpumalanga are towards the top right. In the upper left corner is a small inset map of South Africa.

Hey @MTNza. You can take @ICASA_org to the High Court for saying you have “significant market power” in the telecoms space, but people know the truth! Have a look at the poll results below 👇🏿👇🏿

Beyond the PP’s report, Amapanyaza became a law unto themselves. At the 2024 SoPA when the EFF questioned their presence, they started throwing water bottles at them - as in *attacking elected representatives* - resulting in chaos.
Despite being warned, Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi persisted with Amapanyaza. Now that the Public Protector has ruled against their existence, the scramble has started to try fit them into other security units. Read @City_Press tomorrow

Creating a South African government that works for everyone, not just those with deep pockets, requires a meaningful political challenge from below, argues @KetteringFdn fellow @Kmoeti. bit.ly/4ouTgK8

Today marks 13 years since the #marikanamassacre. The NPA has still not prosecuted anyone for the miners killed on 16 Aug 2012. The families & survivors of the massacre continue to be denied justice.

"When the ultra-rich and corporations have huge sway in government decisions and are able to operate without accountability, democracy deteriorates. This comes at a huge cost to the majority of people, our communities, and the environment."
In this power punch essay, @Kmoeti explores the implications of this reactionary populist ascendancy for South Africa. Fresh out on the @KetteringFdn blog, where Kettering Democracy fellows deliver insights from the frontlines of democracy around the world.

[Listeriosis Case Update] Seven years after deadly outbreak, Tiger Brands agrees to settle certain claims in listeriosis class action
Seven years after South Africa experienced the largest listeriosis outbreak in history, resulting in more than 1,000 infections and 218 deaths, food producer Tiger Brands has agreed to settle claims from certain groups in the class action lawsuit.
This is just the first of a two-step process where the company’s liability must still be determined by the courts, only after which compensation can be awarded.
“It’s shocking that it has taken Tiger Brands seven years to admit the obvious. But now that it has, I call on it to embrace its responsibility to every single person who was harmed, end delaying tactics and move expeditiously to compensate all victims. There are a lot of people still suffering from the company’s negligence. They deserve an apology, finality and justice.” - Mark Heywood.

I'm not mad that they are going, I'm pissed that this is how it happens when over the last few months there's been so many reports about refugees and asylum seekers in so many places including that place have been attacked and shunned, after the deadliest year for migrants.
The Department of International Relations said a group of 49 white Afrikaaners en route to America under a controversial resettlement programme could jeopardise their refugee protections if they try to come back. shorturl.at/K7No7
Anyway, to hear from actual refugees check out SADA, a project of @AmnaHealing which shares the loss, the grief, and the emotional impact of displacement in a very collaborative way here sadaproject.org/ Also recommend this long read theguardian.com/world/2021/j…
