Finding the detention of large numbers of distressed victims of torture very upsetting. Immigration detention can cause life-altering harm and injury to vulnerable people. I've seen it and it makes me so angry to see my tax £ used to maim people in need of help. Short 🧵

The very same politicians who publicly and privately described the Rwanda scheme as unworkable, immoral and "batshit" are now telling the country we have to support it at all costs

The Government's cruel Rwanda Bill will now become law
It rips human rights away from people who come to the UK hoping for safety for them and their loved ones
With @FreefromTorture + @AmnestyUK, we transformed Parliament to let everyone know about this crime against compassion

We are outraged at the passing of the #RwandaBill. Instead of giving vulnerable people the protection they need through a fair asylum process, the government is determined to pursue this cruel policy which will cause untold harm.

Yesterday, the High Court handed down judgment in an unlawful detention claim where I appeared on behalf of the Claimant - finding that C had been unlawfully detained for 60 days and awarded 20k in damages bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/KB/… Oluponle v The Home Office [2023] EWHC 3188 (KB)

£20,000 damages for 60 days UD where “effect on C was “serious, the conditions appalling and [detention had] long-lasting effects on him”.
Fairly strong comments by judge on quality of detention reviews - but unsurprising to those who’ve done such work.

HO refused permission to appeal twice against FTT decision. My client, who arrived in the UK as a #teenager and subsequently reached adulthood, was found by the FTT to meet #paragraph298 of the #ImmigrationRules thus qualifying for #ILR. Judge accepted "serious, compelling or other considerations" were present. After a long battle, I am very pleased for my client. Well done and thank you to counsel @KimRenfrew @JustitiaChmbrs for her excellent advocacy and preparation of the appeal. #India

On #TamilGenocide Remembrance day, we remember crimes committed against humanity. “We will honour the legacy of the #Mullivaikal victims. By never forgetting. By never being complacent. By always, always speaking up." The ongoing #TamilGenocide denial and distortion of facts – the attempted #rewriting of history - deeply undermines the suffering of generations. @GCR2P

The #IllegalImmigrationBill will have ramifications far beyond the UK. The stakes could not be higher. It risks unravelling the international refugee protection regime and the hard won institution of asylum 🧵
