A long, long time ago, I was feeling subversive and began writing The Tales of Halziyon, a book about a fantasy world where all the standard fairy story tropes were backward, but over time, prove to be true... because they are. I wrote a fat kid who liked being a lazy, vague misogynist, a powerful wizard pretending to be enigmatic, and a 90 lb girl who desperately wanted to be a great adventurer, rudely demanding a status she hadn't earned. And I threw them into a quest to save their world. The Wizard, guided by prophecy. The fat kid guided by The Wizard's manipulative charm. The girl guided by her longing to be recognized. Then I got really silly about it and created a fairy dragon who acts like a house cat that can talk, expecting everything and everyone to bow to its dominance, and an ancient android programmed to see itself as a fundamentally important slave to the society that created it. And even though everything I designed was meant to make fun of the things I love about Fantasy, the more I wrote about these absolute goobers, the more they slipped into the exactly right place for them. The fat kid kept trying to be a hero, and succeeded when he stopped trying and listened to his heart. The Wizard stopped lying to be mysterious. The girl became the warrior she wanted to be, not by demanding it, but by doing it for the people she loved. Even the android found a new purpose... and so much more. Only the little dragon remained the same, because, let's face it, it was perfect all along. Fantasy is not an escape. Fantasy isn't about living in the imaginary. It's about using the imaginary to find the truth that God, the universe, whatever you want to call it, has been trying to show you. Well, I took this old story of mine and spruced it up a bit, adding some illustrations by a dear friend and colleague, and I'll be releasing it (or re-releasing it, as it were) very soon.
