What happened on solar #geoengineering at #UNEA-6? @TOClimates and I try to outline the discussions here (in the first part of a 2-part blog). legal-planet.org/2024/03/07/… @joshuahorton533 was asking what we saw. @sktalati may have perspectives to add
SRM resolution backed by US, Saudi Arabia, Japan opposed by a coalition of African countries. Those advancing SRM claim they are acting for the climate vulnerable but most ardent opponents are consistently climate justice civil society, indigenous orgs, and Global South countries
US-led push at #UNEA6 to legitimise SRM, welcome geoengineering advocates & undermining existing UN governance was met by strong resistance, with Pacific Island States, Colombia, Mexico & EU supporting the African Group’s leadership calling for non-use: ciel.org/news/ciel-response-…
To the ~3 people that possibly care: been off here for a while. Might try coming back. Might start liking things again. Maybe even tweeting…er, Xing?
But first things first, obviously: free Palestine, ceasefire now, end the occupation, down w/ the US-led imperial war machine!

Letter by civil society organizations from Africa:
"Advancing geoengineering technologies distracts countries from their commitments to large emission cuts...".
“Africa must engage with initiatives that call for the ‘non-use’ of geoengineering”.

A really important piece drawing attention to the deep & systemic biases in the scenarios & framing of Working Group 3 of the IPCC. There are a lot of lessons and good guidance in this uncomfortable read. To me at least, it helps situate WGIII scenarios as part of the problem.
“People only talk about negative emission technologies, and that’s where the money goes instead of talking about what the world could look like.” We spoke to climate experts @ysaheb and Kai Kuhnhenn from @NeueOekonomie about the #IPCC's ideological bias. rosalux.de/en/news/id/46631/…
A lot happening around solar geoengineering. I recently shared some thoughts with Today, Explained at Vox on risks, funding, and experimentation in this field, and will add some things on context here that I didn’t say there. Thread 1/

The UNEP report offers a detached, scientific approach to governance largely inattentive to questions of power, interests, and political economy - some of my thoughts are included in this piece at Motherboard 7/

This includes the US military searching for “rogue” geoengineers. The language of “rogue states” is the language of imperialism. This is about shaping narrative: dangerous actors might do this, so “responsible” actors like the US should take the lead 8/8

Since Make Sunsets continues to generate headlines, worth remembering that Silicon Valley ethos and $ are a feature of the SRM world not a bug, actively cultivated by the likes of Harvard, SilverLining, and their funders. This recklessness is a logical outcome of a process... 1/2
"To some scientists, the move was a pointless stunt To others, it marked the first-ever-recorded act of stratospheric solar geoengineering."
I wrote about the rogue geoengineers at Make Sunsets for the @washingtonpost.
