The @LordsSTCom report on long-duration storage is out today. Important stuff. My only critique is that this should sit within a wider debate on energy security: long-duration storage is necessary but not sufficient for a clean, affordable and resilient energy supply.
Today, the Lords Science and Technology Committee publishes our report into long-duration energy storage, where we warn that urgent Government action is needed or energy security and Net Zero will be at risk. HTML: publications.parliament.uk/p… PDF: publications.parliament.uk/p… THREAD 1/

Excellent discussion of energy efficiency , Jeavons paradox effects and the miracle of LEDs-and their materials technologies
🧵Here's a thread about an obscure economic theory from a century and a half ago, which is about to become a MASSIVE deal. ⚡️It helps explains why tackling climate change is going to be v v hard. Some say impossible. The story begins with this building👇

Universities are failing to boost economic growth economist.com/finance-and-ec… from @TheEconomist... in short, Unversities need to focus more on turning ideas into cash... and not taking cash to come up with ideas!

We are being served a harsh reminder of a simple truth: most of what constitutes economic activity is actually a form of energy conversion. The real currency of an economy is energy! thetimes.co.uk/article/d4f35…

The corollary must be that surely the UK must invest with every nerve in sinew in developing low-cost renewable energy… Not just for reasons of climate change, but out of economic self-interest?

Meanwhile in the uk we are thinking of softening the regulations on banning the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles and banning the installation of gas boilers in newbuid housing. We have workable solutions… Electric vehicles and heat pumps: we just need to get on with it!

We spent £1m on electric chargers — but we don’t have the power to use them... so a better answer is to generate and store the power locally at the point of use, using solar panels and batteries. thetimes.co.uk/article/a3111…

Perfect approach to regeneration.
Utrecht, NL: Turning a monofunctional concrete duct, serving few motorists, into a biodiverse, beautiful and convivial #publicspace for all living beings to enjoy. The late @MaxNeef called this #synergistic/ #multiplebottomline design: One intervention, achieving many objectives.

Here is a reseach paper that illustrates how investing in distributed residential energy also stabilises the grid and reduces the need for investment in energy infrastructure. @EnergySysCat treehugger.com/rooftop-solar…
I despair. Is this the result of self vested interests, either directly or sub consciously… ? If we convert buildings to being energy positive that will be much cheaper. Will the energy system catapult please challenge this thinking... @guynewey thetimes.co.uk/article/a49e0…

First solar farm connects directly to national grid: why are we doing this... just put it on the roof close to where the energy is needed.. plenty of roof space on supermarkets, warehouses, and football stadiums! thetimes.co.uk/article/e065d…

Redrow is detaching from gas. In one of its trials customers tried the new technology under real conditions for a year. Redrow found that heat pumps used less energy than gas boilers and were between 2 and 3 times more efficient than an A-rated boiler. thetimes.co.uk/article/a1a9c…
