Pay a fee for points on rent or mortgage…nah
The mileage run has been dead for years. The new status move is paying a fee to put your rent or mortgage or your taxes on an airline credit card.
Today United, the last holdout, made it official: starting in 2027, flights won’t count toward United status at all. 1K will take 32,000 qualifying points, and the old path of 60 flights plus 22,000 points is gone. Delta, United, and American will all measure how much you spend, and card spending counts at all three.
I used to do mileage runs. I once spent a Saturday flying Boston to Boston: Chicago, Houston, Dulles, Newark, then home. I didn’t need to be in any of those cities. I needed the flights.
Frequent flyer programs were supposed to get you to fly more frequently. Now a customer who swipes every day can be worth more to the airline than one who flies every week on cheap fares.
And status buys way less than it used to. Delta sold about 14% of its domestic first-class seats in 2011 and 88% by 2024.
I went deep into the strategic moves that got airlines, and us, here, and what I actually book on now, in this week’s Business Class: readbusinessclass.com/p/why-…
Really proud and excited for this one.

The JFK AirTrain is, unfortunately, the perfect way to greet newcomers to our city. First thing upon setting foot here, you’re shaken down for nine bucks just to leave the airport, then dropped off in the middle of nowhere. Welcome to New York!
