Sura an Nisa of the Qur'an ( verse 4:34 ) permits husbands to beat their disobedient wives. I spoke to a Muslim friend and said this verse should be deleted from the Qur'an, as it was unacceptable in the modern age. He in turn asked his wife her opinion whether it should be deleted. His wife replied " I don't mind being beaten by you, but nothing can be deleted from the Qur'an, as it is the word of God "

Stop redefining terms. What are you even talking about? “Modern” isn't some synonym for “secular”. The “Islamic Republic of Iran” is not a secular state but it is definitely a modern one. It could not exist in the pre-modern/pre-industrial world.
