Kenya is experiencing a significant decline in its physical mobile money agent network, with approximately 34,000 agents closing between March and June. During the exact same three-month window, total mobile money subscriptions grew by 1.2%, rising from 53.37 million to 54.01 million. Annually, subscriptions surged by 13.2%. Kenyan digital financial services firm M-KOPA has acquired 100% of Finnish software company KilpiTek in a deal valued at $8 million (about KSh1.04 billion), completed in March 2026, according to the company’s financial disclosures. KilpiTek’s device-locking technology lets M-KOPA remotely restrict financed smartphones when customers miss loan repayments, and the acquisition gives M-KOPA direct control of a core part of its pay-as-you-go lending model, reducing reliance on external providers. M-KOPA, which has also begun financing electric motorcycles in Kenya, says Nigeria has become its fastest-growing market, reaching one million customers faster than any other country in the firm’s history.

China reduced extreme poverty fast, but Indonesia hasn’t been far behind. China is often the poster child for rapid reductions in poverty, and for good reason. In the early 1980s, over 90% of its population lived in extreme poverty, but by the early 2020s, that number had dropped to nearly zero. Some might assume that China is the only reason why global extreme poverty has declined. But that’s wrong: many countries have seen dramatic reductions in poverty, too. Indonesia is one clear example; it’s shown alongside China on the chart. In 1984, 86% of Indonesians lived on less than $3 per day. By 2025, this had fallen to less than 4%. While it didn’t quite match China’s decline, it has still been impressive. The number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen from 140 million to about 10 million. Note that the international poverty line is extremely low, defined as people living on less than $3 per day. But Indonesia has also made progress when measuring higher poverty lines. A brilliant idea! Instead of paying a watchman or installing CCTV cameras for security, just install FREE Wi-Fi at your gate. You will be surprised at how well your house will be watched when more than twenty people are constantly hanging around your gate to use the free Wi-Fi.

Now the challenge is keeping up with it. A $250 Circular Grant will help Yummy Tummy buy ingredients and packaging in bulk, reduce costs and clear 60 pending customer orders, turning existing demand into immediate cash flow. ⚡ The next goal? A dedicated production space and getting Yummy Tummy products onto the shelves of local stores and supermarkets across Nairobi. With inflation rising to 6.8% in September, we looked at how much a KSh 1,000 note has lost in purchasing power since January 2010. ➠ KSh 1,000 then is worth about KSh 344 today, a 65.6% erosion in buying power. ➠ A KSh 10,000 monthly basket in 2010 would cost about KSh 29,060 today. The note’s real value fell below KSh 500 in April 2020, while nearly 20% of its purchasing power was lost in the first two years alone.
Kenya’s annual inflation rose to 6.8% in September 2026, the highest since January 2024, with food and transport remaining the main sources of price pressure. Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages inflation accelerated to 9.5% YoY, with higher prices for milk, wheat flour, cabbages, potatoes and other fresh produce, while Transport inflation stood at 15.6%, reflecting fuel costs that remained sharply above year-earlier levels. Food contributed 2.8 percentage points to headline inflation and transport another 1.6 points. Underlying pressures also strengthened, with core inflation rising to 4.0% from 3.4% in August, its highest level in the report’s September 2025-September 2026 series. Non-core inflation eased to 14.0% from 14.7%, but remained elevated.

African gold exports reached $99B last year, with Bloomberg finding that some countries with little domestic production were nevertheless posting record shipments as gold was smuggled out of conflict zones including Sudan and eastern DRC. The UAE was the main destination for the bullion; in Uganda alone, one refiner accounted for nearly half of more than $8B in gold exports in the 12 months through June, illustrating how conflict-linked gold can enter global markets through major trading hubs. Key Leaders from the Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) 🇰🇪🪖 pose for a group photo in front of an F-35A Lightning II at Barnes Air National Guard Base, Westfield, Mass., 🇺🇸 September 17, 2026. The 104th Fighter Wing hosted key leaders from the Kenyan Defence Forces for a strategic bilateral engagement aimed at enhancing joint interoperability, optimizing sustainment pipelines, and modernizing combat readiness. The high-level exchange focused on critical pillars of tactical aircraft sustainment, specifically detailing the 104th’s standardized Crew Chief training and the implementation of rigorous Quality Assurance frameworks. Additionally, the delegation examined cutting-edge logistical modernization and visited the Maintenance Squadron’s Metals Technology Shop. 104th Members demonstrated how additive manufacturing is being leveraged at the tactical edge to accelerate parts fabrication and deliver rapid combat support. Through this continuous sharing of technical expertise and procedural innovations, both organizations enhance combat capabilities, ensuring that both the 104th Fighter Wing and the KDF remain agile, lethal, and fully prepared to project airpower whenever called upon. This ongoing collaboration is especially significant as October 1st , 2026 marks the 11-year anniversary of this enduring relationship, a milestone that underscores over a decade of mutual trust, and shared growth. i’m sorry to inform you that zero knowledge proofs are not the solution to the KYC data leak nightmare we find ourselves in. the solution is less KYC. advanced cryptography for governments is a slippery slope that will only lead to a more controlled society over time.

A Kenyan man, Daniel Olomae Ole Sapit, accidentally flew to Pyongyang, North Korea, instead of Pyeongchang, South Korea, in October 2014. The viral travel mix-up occurred when his travel agent confused the two similarly named cities while booking his flight itinerary to a United Nations biodiversity conference. Upon landing at Sunan International Airport, Sapit noticed heavy military presence and armed guards. He quickly realized he lacked the required entry visa. North Korean border officials detained and interrogated him for over five hours. They were deeply suspicious of an unauthorized Kenyan national arriving in their capital. North Korean border authorities deeply suspected Daniel Olomae Ole Sapit was an intelligence threat or a spy due to the highly unusual and unauthorized arrival of a Kenyan citizen in their capital. Given the country's extreme isolation and tense geopolitical environment, immigration officials treated his lack of a visa and his explanation of a "spelling error" with immense skepticism. After Sapit successfully convinced authorities that it was an honest geographical spelling mistake, they penalized him. He was forced to pay a $500 (approx. 65,000 shillings) fine for illegal entry. North Korean officials placed him on a flight back to Beijing, China. From Beijing, he rebooked his flights and successfully traveled to South Korea. Sapit remains the only known Kenyan to have set foot in North Korea.
