“Sweden – Nordic leadership in global health: realism and rhetoric” Inspired by @ottersenolep ‘s presentation and our timely conversation about Sweden’s future contribution to global health. I’m delighted to join the Swedish Global Health Reference Group and contribute to this independent, forward-looking report on how Sweden can strengthen its global health contribution. It is a privilege to work alongside colleagues with deep experience and long-standing engagement in Africa and global health: @carlbjorkman @ottersenolep @stefanswartpet @EkstromMia , Dr Tobias Alfvén, Ophelia Malala Haanyama and Mette Lybye. Coordinated by @karolinskainst , the initiative brings together perspectives from across sectors. The conversation also connects strongly with the @ANHS_2027 planned for 9–10 February 2027 in Rwanda. Bringing together representatives from 14 African countries and Nordic partners on African soil could create valuable opportunities for dialogue, mutual learning and genuine partnership. The future of global health partnerships requires a shift: From aid to partnership. From recipient to co-creator. From transferring solutions to creating solutions together. Mutually beneficial partnerships begin with understanding each country’s context, realities, strengths and opportunities. The growing @norrsken_org ecosystem in Africa is one inspiring example: Swedish entrepreneurship and African innovation coming together through locally rooted ecosystems to create value across borders and throughout East Africa. Africa is not simply a recipient of knowledge and solutions. Africa is a source of innovation, expertise and solutions for the world. That should shape how we think about Swedish leadership in global health: less about exporting Swedish solutions, and more about enabling equal partnerships, shared innovation and knowledge flowing in both directions. The question is not simply how Sweden can contribute more, but how Sweden can contribute differently ; by building more equal partnerships, understanding Africa better, and co-creating solutions that benefit both Africa and the world.
