The game’s not complicated. The conversation around it is. I cut through the noise — one kickoff at a time.

It’s the same with Florian Wirtz. He looks far better in European football, where the tempo is often slower, the game is less intense and there’s more emphasis on technical ability.
"One of the best players I've trained with was Veron... the Premier League just didn't work for him!" It's such a shame it didn't click for The Little Witch with Man United 😢

🚨🔵 A conversation between Alonso and Everton legend Peter Reid after the game yesterday: Reid said: “We were having a chat about the goals conceded. But today, the organisation, without the ball; different class. How come you’ve conceded that many when you have a team like that? I’m blaming you!” Alonso replied: “It’s a process. You make mistakes, you analyse them, you work from them, you learn from them. For sure, we have seen an improvement, especially after the break against Bournemouth,” he said.” (Stadium Astro on YT) #CFC

Ruud Gullit absolutely bossing it for Milan vs Lazio 34 years ago today. First, an instinctive volley to open the scoring, then a sensational pass to set up Jean-Pierre Papin. A golden era of Serie A.

#OTD in 2000 - A brilliant header from Teddy Sheringham, plus two goals in the final 10 minutes from Scholes and Yorke ensured an important 3-1 win for United over PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League at Old Trafford 🏟

This is the best I have seen Real Madrid this season. Arda Guler is so special. He has to start every game. #RealMadridSevilla

I think the main catalyst was the end of an era, with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid and Spanish football. It had far less to do with Bayern Munich or Pep coming to English football than people make out.
Prem teams from like 2012 - 18 were a joke in Europe. Spanish and German teams would take the piss over us. It wasn’t till like pep came in the league and Liverpools UCL final that we patterned up.

When Kevin Keegan retired from football in 1984, he moved to Spain with his family and disappeared from the game almost completely. He played so much golf that his daughters barely associated him with football at all. “For years my daughters thought I was a professional golfer.” “They didn’t realise I had anything to do with football.” Keegan was happy with that life. “I had no intention to get back into football.” “Until one day, early in 1992, when out of the blue I received a call from the Newcastle chairman Sir John Hall.” Newcastle were next to bottom of the old Second Division, around £6million in debt and in real danger of dropping into the third tier for the first time in their history. Hall did not waste much time trying to sell the job. “The two people who can save Newcastle are talking right now.” “You have got the passion, and I have got the money.” Keegan had spent years saying no to football jobs. This one was different. He had finished his playing career at Newcastle, understood what the club meant to the city and liked the fact that almost everything needed fixing. “I wanted to take a sick club and make it better.” “I wanted to be a football doctor.” When Keegan arrived back at St James’ Park in February 1992, he quickly discovered just how sick the patient was. The first time he went to the training ground at Benwell, Terry McDermott summed it up for him. “S*** hole.” The dressing rooms, gym, baths and showers were filthy. There was no washing machine, so players were taking their own kit home to clean it. The club was also saving money by travelling to away games on the day rather than putting the players in hotels the night before. “The players didn’t feel valued.” Keegan decided that had to change before he even started worrying about tactics. He spent around £6,000 of his own money on the training ground. The place was fumigated, cleaned from top to bottom and repainted over one weekend. Keegan simply wanted the players to walk into work and feel like professional footballers again. “Soon the players began to train and play with a sense of pride again.” Then he actually watched them train. Keegan had been away from football for seven years and barely knew the players in the Second Division. After the first session, he pulled McDermott aside. “Wow, they are not that good.” Keegan later joked that despite both of them being in their forties and having been retired for years, he and McDermott still looked like two of the better players in the five-a-sides. His first deal was only until the end of the season. Sir John Hall had offered him three years, but Keegan did not see the point. If Newcastle went down, he did not want to be tied to a long contract. So he took a basic wage for the final three months, with the money doubled if he kept them up. Newcastle survived. They confirmed it on the final day with victory at Leicester and finished four points clear of the relegation places. Keegan had only been back in football for a few months. He had inherited a club heading towards the third tier, cleaned the training ground with his own money, rebuilt the players’ pride and kept Newcastle alive. Then he made one thing clear. “This club should never put the supporters and the good name of Newcastle United in that position again.” Within a year, Newcastle were promoted to the Premier League as champions. Within four, Keegan had them challenging for the title. #football

Henrik Larsson arrived at Celtic in July 1997 for £650,000. On 3 August he came on at Hibs and gave away the ball for the winning goal. Rangers were chasing a tenth Scottish League title in a row. On 3 May 1998 Celtic drew 1-1 at Dunfermline after a late equaliser, which left the decisive match for the title on the final weekend. A Celtic fan, a grown man in tears, told Larsson that he had to stop them winning the tenth. Larsson said later that this was when he understood what the title meant to the fans. On 9 May, Celtic needed a win against St Johnstone at Celtic Park. Larsson scored after three minutes, a shot from 20 yards into the corner. Brattbakk added a second and Celtic won 2-0 in front of 50,000 people. Rangers beat Dundee United 2-1 the same day, so Celtic finished two points clear. It was Celtic’s first league title since 1988. Larsson stayed seven more seasons and scored 242 goals.

Milan coach Fabio Capello with all his foreign players before the 1993-94 season. At that time Serie A teams were allowed to register as many foreign players as they wanted but could name a maximum of three foreign players on their 16-man matchday squad. The extra foreign players usually travelled with the team and watch the match from the stands in their club suits. Marco van Basten was injured that whole season, and Florin Răducioiu and Brian Laudrup did not get much playing time. This meant that Zvonimir Boban, Dejan Savićević and Jean-Pierre Papin had to rotate with another foreign player, who is not in the picture, for the three spots in the team. There is one more player in the picture, who also did not play any matches for Milan that season. Can you name both players?

Eze is a quality player, but his struggles at Arsenal aren’t surprising. Their style doesnt suit him. Morgan Rogers would have faced the same problem if he’d joined. Players like them need to receive the ball in pockets of space and have the freedom to express themselves. #NFOARS

Because a vast majority of the coverage and discourse around English football is catered to those three clubs.
Jamie Carragher on Liverpool games Gary Neville on Man Utd games Alan Smith on Arsenal games Why do Sky think we want to hear their bias nonsense while watching their unbearable teams play football?

£46m seemed a lot for a teenage centre-back with no Premier League experience. In pursuing Luka Vuskovic, Brighton knew what they were doing. As usual. Masters of recruitment, got all that A-grade Jamestown Analytics data, all that experience, expertise and contacts to check on character.  Vuskovic had excelled on loan from Spurs at Hamburg. Scoring as well as showing his defensive class. So many attributes: distribution, aerial dominance, physique, strength in one-on-one duels, mindset, a natural leader. Still only 19, still occasional blips for the Croatian international (Bellingham ran off him to score in Dallas. 7-0 England in Rijeka), still developing but what a future in store. Vuskovic will get only better and better under the inspirational Fabian Hurzeler and in this super-positive Brighton team. Another win for Brighton, another Vuskovictory. On current form, £46m looks a bargain. Tony Bloom and Brighton have done it again. #BHAFC  #BHACRY

With the players Arsenal have, Arteta needs another tactical evolution. Their attacking play has been shocking for the last two years. Now he’s won a league title, he should feel able to tweak his approach and give those attacking players more freedom to thrive. #NFOARS

Arsenal have been dire all game. They finally had one quality player on the right around the 70th minute. Forest need to be more alert to the second ball before Madueke picks it up on the left and gets his shot away. #NFOARS
